Kanefield recognizes what so many either never knew, or forgot - a certain segment of Americans never bought the whole idea of “democracy” and “fair play” and “equality” in the first place. That’s why the idea that America is “exceptional” is so dangerous.
Exceptionalism can be the false belief that we don’t have the risks of authoritarianism that threaten to topple other democracies. That can make us lower our threat alert. We did. We let a criminal international mob install Trump. WE LET THEM.
That’s the part that worries me about Mueller’s report and investigation. I don’t share others’ doubt that we’ll see the parts that condemn Trump, soon. But will we see analysis and plan to fix the giant hole in our intel defenses that was blind to this plan, until too late? Hm?
This is why I wonder about the Reality Winner prosecution. She wasn’t jailed merely for exposing classified intel. She was jailed for exposing a colossal intel FAILURE that happened on Comey’s watch, and before that, on Mueller’s.
You’re probably aware of the huge drop in US white collar crime enforcement in the past few decades, as resources were increasingly diverted to a “drug war” that never worked or had any chance of working. That drop was us throwing the gates open to install a Trump.
And though the Citizens United decision gets most of the blame, there’s four decades of harmful, poorly-reasoned SCOTUS precedent undermining our nation’s ability to protect election finance from foreign influence. That was us throwing the door open to install a Trump.
We’ve also had decades of lackadaisical attention to the enormous risks of electronic voting equipment, and holes in the security of voter rolls themselves. Coupled with punitive ID checks, the registration tampering holes exposed by Winner threw open the door to install a Trump.
Then there are the structural risks created by massive, virtually-untaxed wealth hoarding. We have oligarchs. Yes we do. And we allowed them, via tax unbalancing, to become more powerful than our democratically-elected government. That REALLY opened the door to install a Trump.
Where were America’s intel agencies? Why did they not alert and muster to prevent? Did they try to bring focus to the threat, but encounter some obstacle? I voted for Obama twice, but I always found him unsavvy to the Putin threat. Was that a factor? We need to know.
I don’t care how the cards fall on blame. What I do care about is “how are we moving to fix it?” And with an admin in power that does not want it fixed, that means our intel agencies may have to buck up and bring their game plan to the public directly.
Several courts are moving toward Trump Family prosecutions. The House is moving toward impeachment. But how is the enforcement end protecting our elections? How are they shutting the giant hole in the fence that allowed international criminals to install a Trump?
Aside from details, we already know what the report’s going to say about Trump. I want to know what that report’s going to say about US. Congress can’t waste days and Barr knows that by delaying, he weakens our defenses to having Trump installed again by foreign adversaries.
So bugle the charge, @AdamSchiff! Charge, @RepJerryNadler! Charge, @RepCummings! 2020 is nearly here. Every day counts.
