"Unfathomable," except for tens of millions of people who've been saying otherwise for decades but who her dogmatic conservatism prevented her from listening to because she assumed they all just hated America.
I've long found it incredibly galling what unsympathetic interpreters of their opponents American conservatives have been. They just lump everyone together into some incipiently totalitarian monster called "the left," cherry pick a few examples and stay ensconced in their bubble.
To paraphrase Elizabeth Warren, I've got a thread for that.
Let me just say, if a significant chunk of your public persona involves being proud that many people think your ideas are simplistic and socially harmful, then maybe you should rethink your persona.
If you listen to "liberal" podcasts what you generally hear are conversations about specific problems and debates about policy solutions. If you listen to "conservative" podcasts what you hear is whining about "the left."
You know what most "leftists" think about their fellow citizens who are conservatives? They would like them to benefit from universal social programs like Medicare for All or UBI or Social Security. And also, they would like them to treat others how they would like to be treated.
F-ing monsters, eh?
Returning to this thread to include one more story about self-defeating, conservative closed-mindedness. Last year Meghan's hubby (an editor at The Federalist) joked with Sen. Mike Lee about an "anti-racist book festival" he was going to attend and then trash in The Federalist.
I know Meghan and her husband (an editor at The Federalist) are different people, but their politics are not unsimilar. This is the key point, at that event, this conservative could have learned from 2 brilliant historians.
But of course he didn't. All he wanted to do was to ridicule the event. Because he wanted to "own" somebody or other. He clearly didn't understand anything he heard. Sad.
"No one takes our ideas seriously," say the people who don't take anyone else's ideas remotely seriously.
Both Meghan and her hubby are the children of DC conservatives. They both were socialized into right wing American politics. They are total creatures of the conservative swamp, who pretend to be anti-groupthink mavericks. Spare me.
