KMOX Radio, 1120 AM, calls itself "The Voice of St. Louis". CBS owned it for decades.
The Cardinals were the westernmost baseball team for several years, and KMOX's signal could be heard at night in the contiguous 48. Not in actuality, but Cardinals fans were made...
throughout the Midwest, especially when Stan Musial was doing it, and Harry Caray and Jack Buck were talking about it. Imagine say, 1950.
Bob Hardy ran KMOX from about the late '60's to the late '80's. He was an archconservative, a racist.
When he retired word was they had to get a hard-ass to replace Hardy. We can't let up on those shiftless Blacks all around us.
What I'm saying is, this refers to what was going out over the air to who got hired.
They were lily-white...oh, they seemed to have one prominent Black over the years. Bill Wilkerson did sports years ago. Carol Daniel is that representative today.
Anyway, "The Voice of St. Louis" started airing Rush Limbaugh in about 1988.
My dad and I were appalled and leaped into action. He wrote. I called.
Nope, Rush is the shit, we were told.
"The Voice of St. Louis" was airing Rush Limbaugh 10 hours a week.
That was bush league to me at the time. Man, if you want to carry that guy, shunt it over to 1570, or 1610, knowhumsayin? Now that I think about it Rush was such a sensation he could ask for a lot of money.
I am defeating my purpose, ha ha!
I had to sample him. He was everywhere. I was just going into radio. He was on our Iowa AM side later on. From Fairfield to St. Louis, every weekday.
I noticed his whole schtick was two things: he was either lying, or making a mountain out of a mole hill. That's it--lying or wrong focus, wrong priorities.
That's what Fox does--they are lying or making a mountain out of a mole hill.
So the culturally-sanctioned, current, empowered position says to be a straight white man, and, oh by the way, YOU MUST BE A STRAIGHT WHITE MAN (if you want all this), is to be a Rush guy in St. Louis when I was a young man.
A "Rush guy" in today's America is a perfect anachronism. A Rush guy is a caricature of a cartoon of a TV show from 1950.
That model is broken.

I hope you watched Brené Brown on 60 Minutes. Maybe I'll go follow her.
