This is the subject of my recent arguments against a certain retired judge, who said that the death penalty would scare off would-be criminals. I retorted that it was a lazy way of thinking about & looking into criminality. I will try to recall those arguments here.
Capital punishment has not been a deterrent to crime, whose root causes are in poverty, economic inequities, poor health care, inadequate public services, corrupt govt & justice system, bad educational system, poor human-rights record, & other unfreedoms as as understood
in political philosophy. Rich countries with excellent health care, high employment rate, topnotch educational system, least red tape, competent & honest govt officials, efficient public services & transport system, & good records of human-rights and press-freedom
protection have low or the lowest, or even zero crime rate. Look at #TheNetherlands, where it had to shut its prisons because there were no more prisoners. Look at #Denmark, #Switzerland, and many other European countries where there is no death penalty. In #Europe,
it’s only #Belarus and #Russia that still have the capital punishment, but the latter has imposed a moratorium on execution since 1996. Now, why the crime rates are higher in countries that impose the death penalty than in those that do not have it? #SaudiArabia ,
for instance, has one of the most—if not the most—severe capital punishments in the world and, until recently, had been done in public to further discourage criminality. But why is Saudi’s death row has never been emptied? On the contrary, Saudi is among the countries
with a high number of inmates waiting execution. Contrast that with countries like #Switzerland, #Denmark, & #Sweden, where their respective citizens enjoy a higher and wider degree of freedoms coupled with good governance—and the uselessness of the death penalty
becomes apparent. Besides, why do some govts see criminals as bad entities to be punished, not as human beings to be rehabilitated? Third World countries like the Philippines always have serious problems with their justice system. Surely, many convicted
need to embrace #Kant ‘s categorical imperative. A democratic and rational society has the duty to respect freedoms and nurture life, not kill its citizens.
