A long thread on masks. Even DIY Masks work - and how to get the best mask possible, even if you have to make it.
I address some common misconceptions, touch on the science, lay out how to DIY Masks with information from aerosol scientists and engineers, and give solutions
to problems that come with wearing masks.
Note: the eyes can also be a target for the virus, so sealed goggles are recommended. And you don't want to get any mask wet, so wear a faceshield as well to protect the mask from rain.
No mask is 100%, especially if you have
unmasked people around you. Even if you have a mask on, avoid indoor locations and social distance. Although, there is at least one recorded case of CoVid being contracted within 15 seconds in a semi-outdoor location:

You may say, "CO2? Bacteria?
Heard of them? I don't want to get poisoned." Doctors and nurses spend 12 to 15 hours per day in respirators that are far more restrictive in terms of air flow than any mask you can purchase or make. Zero cases of CO2 poisoning.
Same for house painters, car body shop
crews, cabinet makers, etc, etc.
You raise an eyebrow, "Yeah, but I've heard the virus is super small, so masks don't work?" They do.
1st way: Increased humidity near the mouth (the whole article is very well-done):
archive.is/6jZ9C
2nd way - involves aerosol
movement - Brownian motion:
smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-m…
3rd way - you use a mask with a filter pocket, and insert some commonly found household materials that have been tested by aerosol experts and found to be able to be far more efficient than just cotton. The spreadsheet can
be confusing, but I'd be happy to help - ask away!
But, you ask, "Is CoVid even airborne?" Some people say no, because it doesn't blow in the air for miles. So, we'll say its not airborne in the sense it doesn't blow in the air for miles. Or at
at least that hasn't been proven.
We do know it's transported by aerosols, just like SARS (which it is very close to) and the flu. Just CoVid discussed here:
jwatch.org/na51479/2020/0…
nature.com/articles/s4158…
nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… - note this study establishes that
SARS-COV-2 can be transported by aerosols. If it can be transported by aerosols, then we know aerosols by be generated by:
-breathing, talking, singing, coughing, sneezing, etc.

Want studies?
cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6… - face coverings and social distancing were statistically significant in preventing CoVid.
Don't trust the CDC? No problem - face coverings lead to a 40% decrease in transmission in Germany. Town of Jena put mandatory masks in place - and lead to
a massive reduction in cases:

Don't see your neighbors wearing masks? In actuality, most support masks - polls and more here:

On board? Want a mask?
Easiest Mask to get: buy an N95. They are 95% effective.
The best way to clean N95's is dry heat at 70 degrees Celsius/ 158 Fahrenheit for 30 minutes - this was recommended by their inventor who came out of retirement to research and suggest this method.
Make sure the mask is not touching metal, as that will remove the electrostatic charge that makes N95's work.
No 95's available?
Make or buy a mask with a filter pocket.
You can buy them from etsy - or make them here:
(Make Variation B, with filter pocket)...they all
tested some shop towels for the filtration material, as you'll see, and the Wypall X80 towel was their recommendation.

The material you make the mask out of can help - choose cotton for the outer layer, and silk for the inner layer, or any of these
combinations:
Generally for the outer layer, you want very tightly knit material (this was from an aerosol scientist, source lost).

Mask fit is also very important - that's why N95's work so well - they are almost adhering to your face.

You can set up the same thing...use a jar with saccharine (bought on Amazon) in it. Based on this study:

We are all in this together - my mask protects you, your mask protects me.
And now you can also make a mask that will not only protect me - but you, too!

If you are having problems wearing masks for psychological reasons, this might help:
If not, try meditation, followed by visualization, then desensitization training.
