so now ive published my paper on a #preprint (osf.io/preprints/nutr…), its worth comparing my experience with typical #peerreview publishing, mainly to highlight how much time & energy we waste with a system that offers very little added value
1/9

il do this comparison with the last paper i got formally accepted to a journal as these 2 co-occured so there's no "time effect" or anything as a confounder. (JP = journal publishing; PP = preprint publishing) 2/9
JP: rejected 6 times (i think); 3 were editorial rejections *explicitly* mentioning the null findings as a reason for rejection
PP: paper is out there open for anyone to openly critique and i welcome this 3/9
JP: ~18 months from first submission to acceptance. in that time, i wonder if these data would have been useful to any other projects? accepted last month, and STILL NOT PUBLISHED
PP: i finished the paper, and it was published immediately 4/9
JP: probably around 10-20 hours of faffing around with journal requirements and convoluted submission systems
PP: formatted the paper how i felt best, < 15 minutes to submit. DONE.

JP: cost ~$1500 or something
PP: cost ZERO 5/9
JP: many hours responding to reviewer comments, changing things i didnt necessarily agree w but knew its easier/safer to change than risk another rejection. if others read something iv changed & disagree, they now think its my work
PP: these are exactly my ideas. i own this 6/9
JP: little/no recognition to reviewers/editors for their comments from previous submissions (PLoS offer open review so at least the reviewers will get recognition on this version)
PP: everyone who has contributed (me) gets full recognition; any further comments can be open 7/9
JP: based on unpaid labour of editors (depending on the journal), reviewers, and authors, resulting in the journal making profit
PP: maybe also some volunteer work, but i don't think profit is made from #preprints? (might be server specific?) 8/9
in short:
#preprint = free, much less time, full recognition, not based on free labour & private profits(?), open review, immediate publication

imo this is infinitely better, & it was wonderful submitting a paper & crossing it off my to-do list immediately 9/9
