Earlier spoke to @BBCR4Sunday
about the barbaric #murder of French teacher Samuel #Paty. An anti-#terrorist enquiry is in full swing with the authorities making information available as quickly as possible.Meanwhile marches will be held today in commemoration of Paty.#CharlieHebdo
The #Elysee Palace said a “national #hommage” would be paid to Samuel #Paty, on a day to be fixed & it will be coordinated with his family. #Macron said the killer had sought to “attack the republic and its values” & the “#terrorists will not succeed… They will not divide us.”
Told @BBCR4Sunday the difficulty of discussing the issues #Paty's murder throw up is that our starting point is pure #barbarity–an utterly evil act that will be condemned by all decent people, including millions of Muslims who live in France & indeed in other parts of the world.
The National Hommage to teacher Samuel #Paty will – like the ongoing #CharlieHebdo trial – be rightly used as a chance to express compassion & demand justice for the victims of #terrorism, but extremists will also relish it as a chance to spread collective guilt against #Muslims.
Told @BBCR4Sunday#extremists in #France are already saying that the parents & school children who objected to the #CharlieHebdo cartoons are all #terrorist sympathisers. Established politicians, and not just those in Marine #LePen’s far-right National Rally, are saying as much.
Told @BBCR4Sunday many #Muslims are merely asking that #hate laws,of which there are many in #France, are simply implemented to protect them & their children from hateful material,be it inflammatory broadcasts from racists or images depicting their #Prophet naked as a leering fool
Unfortunately, we've now reached the stage when #Muslims are somehow expected to accept being portrayed as an #underclass who have no place in modern #France. The #CharlieHebdo style portrayal of sacred figures in Islam as leering cretins obsessed with bombs is typical of this.
Told @BBCR4Sunday such #malicious caricatures of #Muslims would not be allowed in Britain, just as portrayals of black politicians as monkeys eating bananas would not be allowed in #Britain - yet this is exactly the kind of #obscene material that #CharlieHebdo publishes. #Paty
Told @BBCR4Sunday we have reached the stage in #France when vile portrayals of #Muslims are held up as noble testaments to the #secular state. There are in fact many hate #laws, but they have mysteriously been made redundant when #CharlieHebdo style free speech is championed.
Tolerant, decent people can try & deal with this growing #antipathy towards #Islam in a civilised fashion but as we saw with #Paty's murder & earlier lethal attacks,it is the maniac extremists who are prosecuting this vile onslaught on those associated with #CharlieHebdo. #France

The most memorable – and vicious – #atrocities saw #policemen herding panicking crowds on to #Paris's bridges, where many were tossed into the #Seine. The river became a watery morgue for scores of victims, whose lifeless bodies were washing up for weeks. #17Octobre1961#Algeria
Others died in #police stations, or in nearby woods, where their #mutilated bodies testified to truncheon and rifle-butt injuries. The officers had been incensed by an illegal protest by 30,000 men, women and children organised by the National #Liberation Front (FLN) of #Algeria.
