Thread/ In light of the unprecedented trip/s by U.S officials to #Syria for the first time since the start of the war, the case of Austin Tice & hostages file could be game changer for Syrian-US relations if a positive outcome was reached, so what do we know so far?
1/ Trump has been consistent in reaching out to #Syria on the hostages file since the start of his presidency, several tracks were used to get in touch with the Syrians and persuade them to talk, even offers of assistance in certain areas and sanctions relief were touted.
2/ #Trump sent messages to #Assad and even a formal letter through the Czech embassy in Damascus as a way of trying to create a link with Syria, mainly to get Austin Tice back, who has been missing since 2012 in Darayaa, the Syrians have never officially acknowledged having him.
3/ #Assad rejected almost every message from the Americans and refused to be drawn into the matter until things became more serious and the U.S began to send officials. With every attempt to discuss the hostages file, other matters were stopping progress.
4/ Caesar Act sanctions had started & US rhetoric towards Damascus kept increasing in hostility, from the start there is a clear issue of mistrust and friction between the parties & isn’t helped by different sections of the administration dealing with the Syria file differently.
5/ Clearly It’s hard to negotiate for the release of some hostages when something like the Caesar Act happens, the Syrians always felt they were receiving mixed messages, the U.S would reach out and then increase sanctions or raise the level of aggression politically.
6/ Sources within the Syrian Capital confirmed that the most recent trip discussed by the Wall Street Journal was actually preceded by three different trips by U.S officials over the past months and years, all with the aim of discussing the hostages file.
7/ The Syrians have also never publicly denied whether or not they have Austin Tice, rather preferring to state that they will only discuss other files after the issue of the U.S withdrawing from #Syria is on the table and talked about.
8/ According to some heavily directed and clear political messaging in today’s Al-Watan Newspaper which quoted Senior Syrian sources on the matter, the two U.S officials Roger Carstens and Cash Patel, met with Ali Mamlouk the head of the National Security Bureau in Damascus.
9/ The Syrians didn’t even discuss sanctions, they were solely focused on making the conversation about the U.S withdrawing from Syria. All in all this is an unprecedented event and one to watch closely.
10/ If a deal was to be brokered it would be a coup both for Damascus and for Trump if the terms are agreeable, that’s a big if though, and it remains to be seen whether or not Damascus has any hostages or the will to make a deal.
11/ Several interesting observations and insights from official Syrian sources in this al-Watan Article facebook.com/AlWatanNewspap…

My Latest: Syria is facing a COVID-19 catastrophe | "A worrying rise in daily deaths and infections, especially in Damascus, has left Syria facing what could be its biggest challenge yet"
For a country battling economic turmoil, widespread instability, and heavy sanctions, the outcome looks increasingly bleak. As hospitals overflow with COVID-19 patients, the battered Syrian health system is working at maximum capacity & struggling to cope with the pandemic.
COVID-19 has been shrouded in secrecy in Syria and official numbers have been consistently low due to the general lack of testing, while all information has been required to be channeled through the Ministry of Health
3,106,845 passengers travelled through Heathrow Airport in March alone without tests or restrictions during the worst pandemic in our lifetimes.
The average monthly passenger numbers are usually around 6.5 million, so it's only a 50% drop. And that's just one airport.
This is even worse when you consider that the UK is an island, which should give it good natural geographic defense, it should not be one of the worst affected countries, so zero-measures at airports till this very day is a huge miscalculation.
China delivered medical supplies to Syria in the fight against #COVID19, and yes those two boxes were the supplies. Mask diplomacy doesnt (properly) apply to Syria.
No word on what was in the shipment, nor proof that there was anything other than these two boxes, if there was additional supplies on that plane i will post.
The two boxes are shown being loaded into a truck after disinfection, China promised 2000 Covid19 testing kits last month, so it is likely the rest will follow at some point.
Thread/ As one of the biggest regional escalations in the history of the #Syria war unfolds, here are a few thoughts on the Turkish-Russian/Syrian triangle of fighting in #Idlib – who will back down
1/Evidently #Russia has many limitations and concerns when it comes to an armed confrontation with #Turkey, something which has become increasingly apparent with its decisions in Syria, it does not want to enter a direct war with Turkey
2/#Russia has always proceeded with caution with its regional competitors or partners in #Syria, be that NATO, Turkey, or even Israel, it prefers to take a neutral or passive stance, for example the Syrian S300’s have not been activated and use of them is clearly not allowed.
Thread/ These are the main points in the agreement between the #SDF and the Syrian government. #Syria
1/ The abolishment of the #SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), with all the current Kurdish forces and military groups joining the 5th Corps (Assault Legion) under Russian control
2/ A solid guarantee of full Kurdish rights in the new Syrian constitution with autonomy which will be agreed upon by Kurdish leadership & Syrian state.
#Daraa may have been retaken 'in name' by government forces but violence continues to rise. My latest piece for @MEI_CTE "As violence flares up in Daraa, control can be an illusion"
@MEI_CTE 1. The situation in #Daraa has been regressing in recent months, assassinations, checkpoint attacks, fires, & clashes have wreaked havoc in the area and created a number of predicaments
@MEI_CTE 2. Southern #Syria may officially be back under government control, but thousands of opposition fighters never left & stayed under Russian-brokered reconciliation deals
