【My speech at Frankfurt Book Fair —— Joshua Wong als Gast auf der ARD-Buchmessenbühne】

Full speech: patreon.com/posts/43059474

1/ I recalled in last year a high-level official from a European country had openly said they don’t want to ‘’interfere in other people's issues"...
2/ ...despite the fact that companies of that country played a part in the brutality of Hong Kong police by supplying police vehicles. It is a typical display of the not-in-my-backyard mentality. However, we are living in a connected world. HK can serve as a story to learn from.
3/ We were unaware of the Chinese regime's intention to gain influence and control over our economy in the early years. And our economy now is to some extent too reliant on China, which makes our battle for freedom and democracy harder.
4/ There are calls for more cooperation between Euro & China to ‘guide’ it towards democratic norms. But to me, these are only concessions. it's proven multiple times in terms of trade, digital security or in territorial disputes that Beijing isn't responsible to plays by rules.
5/ I see no point of aiding and assisting the greatest threat to human rights to expand its scale of violence in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. Trade and economic activities are indispensable, but perhaps we should emphasize more on ‘reciprocity’.
6/ I wish the world could uphold -- more principle-based and value-based instead of money-driven, just do business with conscience and make the righteous decisions. There are certainly more cherished values that deserve more genuine recognition than investment deal negotiation.
7/ But before any right things are done, it is high time we understand what is true from what is wrong. The case of Hong Kong is already a lesson proven painful. A relationship built on lies will not be trusted and sustainable. It is the high time these values were acknowledged.
8/ I’m sure it would be helpful to devote continuing attention to HK, no matter regarding @save12hkyouths or state targets like myself. Confronting Chinese propaganda and lies is also a way to stand with HKers. We hope the world continues to speak up when our voices are silenced.

10/ I doubts the plan boils down to a change of linking city in mainland China with HK to secure a majority that supports Beijing. Then voters in China can vote. It's the greatest election manipulation in HK history. dw.com/de/joshua-wong…
11/ Nina George, president of the European Writers' Council, was impressed by the determination and resistance that Joshua Wong exuded in spite of the repression and the personal risks: "Deep admiration, but also deep hope" dissolve the persistence of the Protest movements in...
12/ ...Hong Kong or Belarus expressed in it: "But it is also up to us not to let up," said George. Publishers and the Book Fair would have the opportunity to give critical voices like Wong a stage to make their books accessible.

[No one should be left out of the team for his words for justice]

1. I am deeply disappointed by @Arsenal's decision to take @MesutOzil1088 out of #PremierLeague squad, just because he has spoken out for #Uyghurs now detained in hundreds of internment camps in #Xinjiang.
2. While the club has spoken out for #BLM, it is just unbelievable for the club to biasedly censor its players' outcry against injustice in #China, which makes people wonder if the club kowtows to #Beijing.
3. I always remember #ArseneWenger's parting words before his retirement - "Take care of the values of the club." Unfortunately, reality appears to be the opposite.

[My idea on #MilkTeaAlliance]

1/ “The innovative idea of Milk Tea Alliance will enhance more students to push forward global solidarity which might confront hardline crackdown,” Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong told Reuters.
2/ I believed #MilkTeaAlliance could create a “pan-Asia” grassroots movement that would draw more attention to social causes in Asia. “Be it Belarus, Thailand, or other places where injustice is happening, we are constantly fighting for the same beliefs."
3/ I added my voice to the throng, posting a meme of three figures clinking glasses of milk tea and calling for pan-Asian solidarity “to fend off all forms of authoritarianism from China.” (Interview from @niccijsmith @Telegraph)

[The world please stands with #Thailand]

1. To stamp out pursuers for #Thailanddemocracy, a sweeping emergency decree was just announced, under which #Thai government banned mass gatherings, imposed media meltdown and can mobilize troops to crack down dissents.
2. At least 27 activists, including prominent figures Anon Nampa, Prasit Karutarote, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak @paritchi, Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul & Nutchanon Pairoj, were arrested. Police can intercept citizens’ communications, impose travel bans on Thais & deport foreigners.
3. Under the decree, media meltdown was imposed, banning media nationwide from publishing news or info (incl online) that are regarded by the regime as “inciting fear among the public”. International media like @BBCWorld and @CNN covering #ม็อบ14ตุลา in Thailand were blocked.

[Birthday amid turmoils]

1. Today is my 24th birthday, but it has already been celebrated ahead of time in June, days before the enactment of the sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw.
2. Under #Beijing’s grip, when blank placards are regarded as subversive, w/ liberal books pulled from libraries and #TiananmenSquareMassacre censored, no #HKers can tell whether they'll be safe in the next minute. All we can do is fighting for the best & preparing for the worst
3. All I wish this year is another birthday meal with my family next year, the safe return of the #12hkyouths, and the release of thousands of freedom-seeking #Hkers now detained in prison. #save12

[Finally, I have graduated!]

1. Today, I have received the graduate certificate from #OUHK, confirming that I have completed my Bachelor of Social Sciences (Politics and Public Administration) with Second Class Honours (Upper Divison) by the University's Senate. Image
2. Throughout my six years in college since the #UmbrellaMovement in 2014, I have been suspended from my studies because I was sentenced to imprisonment. I have also tried taking examinations in prison. Now that I have finally graduated, my wish has been fulfilled.
3. In the past 6 yrs, I'd like to thank my professors for caring me & my classmates for their understanding. Though the university is conservative & our president is rumouredly an underground CCP member, university never exerted pressure on me during my studies, which is not easy

1/ The arrest serve as “testing the waters”. By arresting me with a comparatively minor charge, the authorities is testing whether the global community would react, and if so, how strong will the reactions be.

patreon.com/posts/42195698
2/ To their dismay, the response from all of you, and others who support HKers, proves that Beijing has every right to be worried. My arrest, undoubtedly a political prosecution, is clearly designed to intimidate the people of HK ahead of the Oct 1 Beijing’s National Day.
3/ There is nothing to celebrate on my prompt release. It only illustrates how the Hong Kong government is not doing their job, they ought to be devoting the effort into helping the 12 young asylum seekers, not arresting me with the absurd anti-mask ban.
