One of the first #MilkteaAlliance campaigns was to raise awareness of how Chinese dams are causing ecological problems for the people of Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam etc. Saying it’s because of ‘US efforts’ erases the very real concerns of the peoples in these countries. Image
Many Chinese & Americans, left and right, like to pretend every issue is some proxy war between the two powers, forgetting there are actual people getting squeezed in between who really don’t give a shit about your Thucydides trap etc who just want to have a normal life.

The divide and conquer strategy along ethnic lines is used as a common strategy among authoritarian rulers across Asia in China, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore, who use racial supremacy to suppress others and stay in power.

"The Tatmadaw knows well about these issues and uses them to divide and control us. They promise to grant the older generation’s demands and give them their own territory."
"Since the coup, people have become more divided. Some view the coup as an opportunity, if they side with the military.

Now, many Lisu are uncertain about their stance. Some might support the KIA because it is fighting against the military and they want the coup to fail."

🧵Today we are expanding our #ThereIsHelp notification service for people in need of legal advice relating to Freedom of Expression in 🇹🇭, as we learnt many of them are not fully aware of their legal rights or how to seek help from existing resources:
According to @TLHR2014, more than 635 people (incl. 40 under 18 years old) have been charged for political involvement and expression since the Thai youth rallies on in 2020; some were without legal representation at the time of arrest.
We strongly believe that people are entitled to freely express their political opinions. Our service relies on a free and #OpenInternet which in turn enables greater participation in civic events, such as the #MilkTeaAlliance, peaceful demonstrations and elections.

🧵Against my better judgment & the advice of mental health professionals, I am going to try to live-tweet this UNSC Arria on #WhatsHappeninglnMyanmar.
First, tho, some throat-clearing. I find this whole thing infuriating because @UKUN_NewYork could have organized an Arria on 2/2.
Arria meetings are the lowest common denominator & least formal options available to the Security Council & pretty much anyone can convene one any time. It is a travesty that it has taken 65 days to hold one & that there has still been no formal agenda item added to the Council.
As the 'penholder' on Burma, and the rotating president of the Council in February, @UKUN_NewYork bears much responsibility for this failure of diplomacy & failure of leadership. Two months, and 600 lives lost, because of weak leadership on the part of the so-called like-minded

Heng Swee Keat no longer in the running to be Singapore’s next prime minister. He says the result his team got in East Coast GRC in the last general election is not the reason why he chose to step aside.

Sure thing, buddy…
What’s not mentioned here is that LHL *could* have stuck to the schedule of stepping down in 2022; some have argued that his pledge to remain (made in the middle of the GE2020 campaign) was a response to lacklustre public enthusiasm for Heng and the 4G.
After all, LHL had already allowed the 4G to oversee the #Covid19 situation, which is why we kept seeing Lawrence Wong at those briefings. If there was confidence in the 4G, LHL could have stepped down at 70 as promised.…

How ❓
Myanmar has been under military dictatorship for six decades. Even though the country is rich in forests and natural resources, the citizens are the poorest in the world...
So who are the rich people?
They are the ones those abuse the use of weapons and take over the resources of Myanmar. They are the #Myanmar military.

This guy is MinAungHlaing, the general of Tatmadaw (Myanmar military). He staged a coup back in february 1st...

#Myanmar military junta terrorist staged a coup back in February 1. And the people have been protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy since then. But the terrorists have killed over 320 people (the youngest was 7 years old), and have detained nearly 3000 activists..
So why are we writing this thread? Because we need your help to ask the Japanese government and the Japanese companies who are still working with the Terrorist (Myanmar military junta)...
