Great speech by @EmilyThornberry in Global Britain Debate!
But OMG!!!
Now #Theresa May speech is ASTONISHING!😲 @carolecadwalla @mrjamesob
Global Britain: It's about more than trade, it's about "shared values, our respect for human dignity, human rights, equality, the #RuleofLaw
freedom, democracy..it's about how we work with others.& maintain rules-based order which protects those values..
Sadly what we saw last wk in US shows us how fragile..democracy can be when it is under pressure from #populism & #nationalism fuelled by messages disseminated on SM!
At current pt for UK post Brexit dealing with Covid, yet to deal with societal & economic impacts..imperative we reject any push toward nationalism & isolationism😱
Move away from strong men facing upto each other..& find ways to work with those who share our values under threat
I have to say to the govt that threatining to break an international treaty shortly after signing it, reducing International Aid ..does not enhance our impact & in fact makes it harder for us as 'Global Britain' to get our message around the world. 😱

What's most striking =treaty's ASYMMETRY: We are a service economy running goods deficits & service surpluses, yet this treaty gives the 27 free access here for their goods but gives us nothing..
❌NOTHING in return on services:
❌NOTHING for the City or Edinburgh;
❌NO passporting
❌NO equivalence
❌NO recognition of qualifications
❌NOTHING on data adequacy
❌NOTHING for the digital or creative economy, hard hit by the loss of free movement.💔😭
As for exports of UK goods, on top of the NEW BORDERS & BUREAUCRACY, our negotiators have LOST on:
Rules of origin, on SPS & on testing & certification.😭

EU exporters to us face no similar costs here, so it is not just asymmetrical, it is LOSE-LOSE😭#BrexitReality #BrexitDeal

I will vote against the Bill..in protest against this bad agreement & its chaotic, UNDEMOCRATIC implementation. The Bill is UNDEMOCRATIC not just in its timescale but in its content, with MASSIVE, all-encompassing HENRY VIII powers in Clauses 31- 33
"The PM wrote to us all on Christmas Eve that the agreement prioritises the safety & security of citizens"🙄😜

That alone is a very good reason for voting against the #BrexitBill, but there is an even more important reason...
..it represents a damaging change in role for the UK =wholly against the interests of its people😢
Never has there been a time since WW2 when we need close allies & the closest co-operation btwn the nations of the world more...to solve world problems that we all face together.💔
