Starting with an exercise to see where we are all coming from. Not geographically, but measuring our white privilege through a series of questions. We are all coming to this conversation from different places, we recognize and embrace this. #BringPeopleTogether#TeVE
@EquitySupt1 reminds us that Feb. is set aside for #BlackHistoryMonth. Learnings that have come from Martin Luther King for Dennis - racial metamorphosis. White allies for MLK? He found them amongst other clergy. He called on them to be a part of his work. #BringPeopleTogether
@EquitySupt1 is now quoting Dr. Martin Luther King - helping us to understand the need to be "more devoted to order than to justice".
MLK - "Lukewarm acceptance is more bewildering than outright rejection." 💜 #BringPeopleTogether#TeVE
@kateroe3 speaks now about her own consciousness awakening, realizing that her own privilege has actually gotten in the way of doing this important work 💜
@kateroe3 recognizes that she is now unlearning 20 years of beliefs. She advises that it’s okay to say the wrong thing and be embarrassed about it! Value & honour the various perspectives that people bring to the table. #BringPeopleTogether
@jeffmat21 - Looking back & seeing the invisible doors that were opened for him along his career. As a Superintendent he'd look around the room along the way - everyone looked like him. Additional privilege of being a male. Reflect on how you got there. #BringPeopleTogether
@jeffmat21 - Grew up in upstate NY, he did not have the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of people. Moving up the ladder oblivious to the race issue (in many ways) other than trying to address poverty. Jeff shares honest examples of systematic inequalities.
Motivations for @jeffmat21 - close friends & family members who are people of colour that are in danger every time they leave their house and his nephew as a police officer. Who will he be partnered with? How will he handle dangerous situations? Make it PERSONAL💜
We're now #crowdsourcing questions & thoughts from our attendees to make the most of our time together. How would you answer this question?
"What thoughts, questions, and areas would you like our speakers to drill deeper into? Our speakers will answer the top thoughts.
Top Thought! @kateroe3
Have protocols for conversations around race.
Commit to being uncomfortable. Having hard conversations - be okay with NON closure. Katie admits she wasn't always the first to speak up. Just try. 💜 #BringPeopleTogether
Same question ^^ How to motivate? @jeffmat21 - Model it yourself. Make it about the kids!
What do you do when conflict arises? Prepare yourself for this with stories! "Attack" yourself?😮 Check the recording (stay tuned) for the explanation on this! #Humility 💜
@kateroe3 - Commits to being a partner in learning, trying to use her power & privilege for good. Center the conversation around the kids. Find the necessary resources to help you in times of conflict. Book recommendation - "Me & White Supremacy" 💜
How do you gain trust and acceptance in your community?
@kateroe3 - When a problem gets to a district level, emotions run high. She wants to solve/fix the problem. They want to be heard. Be able to learn how to listen better, empathize. Give them space to explain.
How do you gain trust and acceptance in your community?
@jeffmat21 - Mentor them and let them see you being mentored also. Be an ally. Be present when they need you to be present. Get in the mix. #BringPeopleTogether
That's a wrap! Thank you to everyone who joined us today, especially @jeffmat21 & @kateroe3 who both shared their individual experiences openly with us today 💜 Stay tuned for the replay and register for the next #EquityInEducation series Feb 17th here: bit.ly/39IaGyi
@KafrissenKai starts us off with a group activity to recognize our White Privilege. Kai acknowledges that she is showing up today in her own way, and leaning into these conversations as best she can. How are you showing up today? #BringPeopleTogether#TeVirtualEvents
@EquitySupt1 reminds us why we are bringing people together for this work. 90% of school district leaders in the US are white. 90% also stated that the work of #DEI is important but only 20% believe that they are equipped with the skills and talent to lead this work! #Equity
@KafrissenKai opens with a heartfelt welcome. In this work we are supporting each other! We (@thoughtxchng) are learning & growing (with you). We are committed to showing up at co-conspirators, we won't let "perfection" immobile us in starting this important work! #Equity 💜
We're LIVE with Dr. Devon Horton, @EquitySupt1 & @KafrissenKai to learn about how to establish working definitions on the equity journey. Follow along in this thread ⤵️ and by using #TeVirtualEvents and #TeVE.
We are thrilled to see over 100 people making this virtual event a priority! Think of this #TeVE as a prerequisite to your #equity conversations. We will look at how to establish definitions, gain consensus to avoid triggering participants, & lead productive conversations. #DEI
@KafrissenKai - We are stronger together! What is Kai seeing with our customers around #DEI? Leaders are making this an ongoing conversation! Shared definitions are helping to avoid different meanings for different people to facilitate our learning. #BringPeopleTogether
Last chance to join us to review the year that no one expected! We will be LIVE in 10 minutes to look at the questions that made the biggest impact & the conversations that helped communities/organizations make it through tough times. Register now: bddy.me/37jh1PI
It's TIME! We're thrilled to be live with @dessalen to celebrate and share some learnings from this past year. Follow along in this thread ⤵️ and share your insights with us by using ➡️ #TeVE & #TeVirtualEvents#Bestof2020
Quick review -January 2020 was off to a tough start! What was happening back then? ⤵️
Today we're going to learn how to see exactly where everyone in your group lands with Teala! AKA: Breaking your exchanges apart to make them more manageable and define the data (with Survey Questions and Participant Groups) #TeMasterClass#TeVE
Our participants will leave this #TeVE with the knowledge of how to set up their own survey questions & participant groups. Survey questions are close ended questions to better understand participants. Use them to see who has participated and who hasn't.
@KafrissenKai & @EquitySupt1 with a warm welcome to all 💜 Dennis opens with wise advice from a mentor: "As a leader, stay far enough ahead so that your people know you are leading, but stay close enough that you are accessible" #TeVirtualEvents#BringPeopleTogether
@EquitySupt1 These #DEI conversations are so difficult and can quickly gain the wrong kind of attention. Dennis explains his own experience of safety being compromised for having these conversations. Cadence matters when reaching out to have these conversations!
