Did you know that #Africa's 55 countries account for just 1.5% of #COVID19 vaccines administered globally? Why? Incompetent governments? Vaccine hesitancy? Poor vaccine efficacy? Our new monthly #infographic report uses the data to explain... A 🧵1/ developmentreimagined.com/2021/05/14/why…
To date, less than 3% of the world's #COVID19 cases have been recorded in #Africa, despite having only administered 1.5% of the world's vaccines, and 2% of the world's #COVID19 tests... 2/
However, #Africa is not a country. It's possible to split African countries into 6 categories - depending on total cases they have recorded. Of the 55 African countries, 6 varied countries are currently seeing new daily records of #COVID19 deaths... 3/
These differences across countries are because countries have different border controls, social distancing, and now, vaccination rates. But testing on the continent continues to rise steadily. 4/
In contrast, vaccination deliveries are rising slow. Only 5.4 million vaccine doses arrived on the entire continent this month, bringing total deliveries to date to 38 million, to 47 African countries. 4 countries still don't have their orders. 5/
The amount delivered so far to #Africa is equivalent to 3% of total orders made by African governments and the @_AfricanUnion. Of this 3%, only 43% has been delivered so far through the much anticipated #COVAX. 6/
The rest of the deliveries are from bilateral and private sector - much of which are free, and have kept apace this month, except from #India. France became the first European country to donate vaccines bilaterally to an #African country - 100,000 to #Mauritania. 7/
The vaccines that are arriving in African countries are distributed somewhat unequally. Over half of the vaccines have been delivered to the 4 most populous nations, plus #Morocco. Only 5 countries have enough vaccines to fully vaccinate over 10% of their citizens. 8/
This means close to a third of African countries have already used over 50% of their current vaccines, with little clarity on when further batches will arrive. 9/
#African countries seems to so far behind on priority lists that some small amounts of vaccines have had to be destroyed due to expiry, for instance in #Malawi and #SouthSudan. Some doses have been redistributed due to efficacy and safety concerns. 10/
Overall, while all 47 countries that have received vaccines have started administering them, availability means that numbers of citizens partially and fully vaccinated varies hugely across the continent. Only 0.4% of the #African population has been fully vaccinated. 11/
Faced with new variants of the virus from #UK, #Brazil and #India, poor vaccine availability suggests most African governments will have no choice but to keep tightening border controls and social distancing measures to manage #COVID19. The global supply chain isn't working. 12/
Hot off the press! The #UK has just announced its proposed contribution to the 21st replenishment of the @WorldBank’s International Development Assistance Fund (IDA). Why does this announcement matter and is the proposed amount high enough, from an #African perspective?
First - a little warning: This thread might get a bit “wonkish” - as Brits say - but we will try to explain it as simply as possible…
Here goes!
1/
First, it’s worth knowing that in order to exist, the IDA relies on contributions from donor countries which it collects every three years. These fundraising cycles are referred to as “replenishments”. The 21st replenishment (IDA21) will happen next month in Seoul, Korea. That’s why the #UK is making its announcement of how much it plans to contribute.
2/
In the current global financial architecture, IDA matters a great deal to #Africa for several reasons.
IDA is currently the world’s cheapest source of long-term financing for countries that need it the most. And African countries are the biggest beneficiaries of the IDA, accounting for over 70% of IDA’s total historical disbursements. Of the IDA’s top 5 recipient countries, 4 are Africa (#Ethiopia, #Nigeria, #Tanzania & #Kenya).

The @IMFNews issued $650 billion worth of #SDRs in 2021 but 🌍 received 5% while high-income countries received at least 2/3 of the total SDRs.
So what more can be done create an equitable distribution system?
2/
Countries have acknowledged this inequality.
So, some high-income countries like 🇨🇳 have committed to reallocating their #SDRs to #Africa. But this is just one option, our team gave other reallocation options during yesterday's presentation!

📣NEW📣 Our monthly #INFOGRAPHIC is here, with all you need to know about how #African countries are responding to #COVID19.
Our headline?
While deliveries are still far too low, #China has surpassed #COVAX as #Africa's top vaccine source. How and why? Read on 🧵👇🏾!
1/
2/ The first fact to be aware of is that #Africa accounts for under 3% of global cases, under 4% of global deaths, and under 2% of global vaccines administered.
3/ African governments and the @_AfricanUnion have so far ordered doses to cover 50% of the population. But only 1.9% of the population could be covered right now. It's a huge discrepancy, because deliveries are too slow.
THREAD: #China’s new white paper on international development cooperation was released 1 week ago. We’ve been analyzing it in depth so you don’t have to. Here are the headlines. 1/
First, volumes. How much? On average, approx. $6.95bn a year over 2013-2018. That’s a considerable 70% increase from the $4.1bn per year from 2010-2012, in China's last such white paper (2014). 2/
The major increase is in traditional "aid". Grants have more than doubled from $1.48bn to $3.3bn, while loans have risen by 46% from $2.3bn per year to $3.35bn per year. The hit has been to interest free loans which have fallen to just 29 million per year. 3/
#itsourbirthday! Just three years ago, Development Reimagined was formally "born" in China. We are so proud of where we have come, and SO excited about the road ahead... a #thread 1/
