The #G7 this weekend renounced its role as #globalhealth leader, @kentbuse and I argue in @bmj_latest: blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/06/13…

A thread on what next for global health & #healthsecurity.
Speaking at #G20 Rome #GlobalHealthSummit in May, German Chancellor #Merkel had raised the question, “if not us, who?” to end the global #Covid19 #pandemic.

At #G7UK this past weekend, #G7 responded with "Not us," committing to donate 870mn #vaccine doses when the need is 11bn.
Instead of engaging with recommendations of @TheIndPanel to strengthen #pandemic preparedness & the #globalhealth system (theindependentpanel.org/mainreport/), strongly backed by @antonioguterres (), #G7 noted it would "explore" different proposals.
The multilateral system, which to date has depended on #G7 charitable contributions—to countries, to programmes, and to @WHO—is left in limbo.

Each #G20 and G7 summit communiqué points fingers at others to act. Who are these "others"?
We have 4 #recommendations on what must happen next to end #Covid19 & ensure #globalhealth remains relevant to all 👇
1⃣The multilateral health architecture, with longstanding #fragmentation, must be reformed to address multi-sectoral and societal drivers of health.

#Donors & institutions will defend their own legacies, #power & #statusquo. A neutral institution is needed to convene a process.
2⃣The current maldistribution of #power and #privilege must be addressed. The current model relying on charitable leadership from the #G7 needs to be replaced with a model that is more inclusive of the wider membership of the @UN.
3⃣Values-based cooperation with a people-centered approach at its core must complement institutional reforms. #Communities and #civilsociety must be meaningfully engaged and play a central role in agenda setting, prioritisation, funding decisions, and accountability.
4⃣ #Transparency and #accountability for commitments—including through better disaggregation of data to understand who wins and loses—must become the norm in global health.
As with the climate emergency, and gender equality, it is time to rethink global health, upend current power structures, and reinvigorate global health with the commitment, action, and inclusive engagement that is needed.
We'd love to hear your reactions to these proposals & to build on what has primarily to date been an academic (or in many institutions silenced / private) discussion.

👏 that @GPforEducation has reached 1/2 of 5-year funding target.
But absolutely incredible how #G7 during largest #pandemic in a century fails to do something similar with #Covid19. They could have. They didn't.
"Vaccinating the world - we can do that together" PM Johnson states at #G7.
He didn't add: "But we decided not to."
