Why are we just learning this?? #Afghanistan military desertions & collapse is the culmination of *1.5 YEARS* of illicit deals by lowest level govt officials getting Afghan soldiers to surrender their weapons—to the Taliban—in the name of a "cease fire." Trump/Pompeo's ceasefire.
The Taliban capitalized on the uncertainty caused by the Feb. 2020 agreement in Doha between the militant group and Trump admin. calling for a full American withdrawal from #Afghanistan. Afghan forces saw US leaving as assuring the Taliban's return & wanted to be on winning side.
The Feb 2020 Trump/Pompeo Doha agreement to end the war in #Afghanistan left many Afghan forces demoralized.
“They saw that document as the end… The day the deal was signed we saw the change. Everyone was just looking out for himself. It was like [the U.S.] left us to fail.”
"The negotiated surrenders to the Taliban slowly gained pace in the months following the [Trump admin] Doha deal… Then, after President Biden announced in April that U.S. forces would withdraw from Afghanistan this summer without conditions, the capitulations began to snowball."
Capable Afghan special forces were often sent to help units that repeatedly folded under Taliban pressure. Unwilling to surrender or fight outmatched, they put down their arms, put on civilian clothing, & fled. "I felt ashamed [but] would've been sold to Taliban by my own gov't"
#Corruption was more to blame for #Afghanistan's collapse than incompetence. Some frontline police hadn’t been paid in 6-9 months. So Taliban payoffs became more enticing.
“Without the United States, there was no fear of being caught for corruption. It brought out the traitors"
The toll on Afghanistan police had been visible for months. One Kandahar commander grew hunched, dressed more ragged. Repeated retreats aft Doha deal hurt his pride, but going w/o pay made him desperate. He even asked the journo if the Taliban was still offering $150 to surrender
Read tonight's terrific WaPo report. It's clear #Afghanistan's fall was sudden only to those not paying attention. Trump-Pompeo Doha deal demoralized Af forces, enabled corruption that starved them, & the Taliban paid them.
Q: Where'd Taliban $$ come from🤔washingtonpost.com/world/2021/08/…
Remember those reports of #Russia paying #Taliban fighters to kill US troops in #Afghanistan? Trump admin learned of Russian bounties intel in Feb 2020, same time as Doha peace deal. Maybe Putin was paying the Taliban to corrupt & demoralize our Afg allies?
Where'd the Taliban get the money to pay Afghan troops to surrender?
Seems relevant: @nytimes reported an Afghan contractor had been handing out Russian cash from a Russian military intelligence unit to Taliban fighters to target Americans in Afghanistan.
@nytimes Yes, also relevant: “We have very good relations with Russia,” said a Taliban delegation spox during a very recent visit to Moscow. Odd for an officially banned terrorist org in Russia to visit Russia & tout their great relations. But a telling admission. apnews.com/article/taliba…
‼️#Russia has blocked @googledocs, to prevent voters from accessing the opposition’s “Smart Voting” lists of candidates ahead of this weekend’s parliamentary elections. The system was designed to defeat Putin’s ruling party. It’s what @Navalny was promoting when he was poisoned.
@googledocs@navalny Russian courts blocked @Navalny's Smart Voting website as “extremist” & ordered Google & Yandex not to display search results for “Smart Voting”
Police visited office of Google’s Russian subsidiary to “enforce” the order.
FM spox claims the app’s developers have Pentagon links.
@googledocs@navalny As if that weren't enough to keep people from using Smart Voting in Russia's elections, the Kremlin has a proxy backup threat: a wool dealer registered a “Smart Voting” brand name w/ a logo that resembles the Navalny app icon. So anyone using it can go to jail for 6 years.😨
Zelensky finally got his WH meeting. And @CNN its interview—2 yrs late. @ZelenskyyUa tells @FareedZakaria his goal was & is for #Ukraine to win, diplomatically saying he didn’t feel pressure—even if Trump intended it. But jokes a dig at Trump? “This wasn’t Robert DeNiro—my idol.”
@CNN@ZelenskyyUa@FareedZakaria ZAKARIA: Are you worried America will abandon Ukraine [aft Afghanistan w/drawal]?
ZELENSKY: You can’t compare Ukraine to Afghanistan. Since Russia's invasion & occupation in 2014, Ukrainian volunteer citizen battalions have been defending their own country. There was no one else.
@CNN@ZelenskyyUa@FareedZakaria Ukrainian President Zelensky: #Ukraine is not Afghanistan. And #Russia is not the Taliban. Despite having one of most powerful armies in the world, Russia has failed to conquer Ukraine.
Turns out, Republicans aren't really against killing babies. They're kind of for it. Texas leads in child COVID deaths.
Maybe it's time to view anti-abortion activism as another right-wing disinformation campaign, pushing anti-science lies about fetuses, babies & women's bodies.
Seeing the "pro-life" movement as part of the general right-wing strategy—pushing anti-science propaganda, conspiracies & incendiary lies—should free Democrats to fully embrace abortion as a healthcare issue about women's bodies & freedom. "Killing babies" is GOP disinformation.
This is how we need to talk about the anti-abortion movement—as an early right-wing disinformation campaign. Republicans were wildly successful in reframing science into crazy rabid anti-science. GOP's "killing babies" disinformation helped Republicans gain power across America.
10 minutes to #Ukraine’s President Zelensky’s address at @Stanford. His first visit to California.
Nice to see people wearing masks!
thx @FSIStanford
“Everything is possible”—President Zelensky @ZelenskyyUa@FSIStanford says, “This is Ukraine’s credo and mine. Here I am at Stanford, just a common guy from a common family from a common industrial town in Eastern Ukraine, Kryvyi Rih (Krivoy Rog)
First question from a woman from #Belarus, isn’t a question but a statement of gratitude. She thanks President Zelensky for supporting the opposition struggle for freedom. She says he & Ukraine have been an inspiration.
🔥@JohnAvlon: Tucker Carlson's Hungary infomercial was to open the Overton Window, to say #democracy is NOT essential for freedom & security by normalizing Orbán's autocratic regime—which restricts freedoms on every front. Dangerous given Trump coup plot @ DOJ w/ nationalist cons
@JohnAvlon@brianstelter@davidzurawik@ReliableSources 😂FYI @JohnAvlon's awesome slip of the tongue "Hucker's informercial for Hungary" has a name. Linguists call it "anticipation"—when a later sound replaces an earlier one. Anticipating the "H" in Hungary, John said Hucker for Tucker. Often funny, occasionally perfect. #Huckster🎯
@JohnAvlon@brianstelter@davidzurawik@ReliableSources 🔥@YasmeenSerhan: Tucker Carlson was keen on delineating differences between US & Hungary. He described one country as a near authoritarian state—where dissent isn't allowed, ruling class controls the media, politicians enrich themselves & cronies. And then he described Hungary🥁
