I feel there are two surgical procedures that have changed people's lives for the better more than anything else in the last 2 decades.
One is total knee replacements. I remember watching so many Aji Ajobas struggle to just move from one room to another as a kid because of bad
knees.
Now I see so many people in the 60-80 age group climb stairs and walk on the Deccan Gymkhana ground effortlessly thanks to their new knees!
The other is dental implants. I don't think there is adequate awareness of how life changing they are and hence this thread.
For starters, I would like to share something I have observed over the last one year.
It is sad but true that most "Mothers" in the 60-80 age group are the epitome of sacrifice.
More than anything else their personal health has been neglected.Specifically their dental status!
So I request all adult children to take their mother to a dentist and get her taken care of.
Take your dad too but your mother is more likely to have severe dental issues which are affecting her health. I see this on a daily basis.
I will share the case I worked on just yesterday as the amazing transformation dental implants can bring about.
This is a CA who is around 70 and works full time. Works with a lot of companies having collaborations overseas and hence has to deal with the foreign partners over
video calls currently.
He was missing his lower front teeth and back teeth on the left side.
He was keen on getting dental implants but had one request: "I cannot be without teeth for any period of time.".
I assured him I will try my best but cannot guarantee that.
He reluctantly agreed.
So on Wednesday, we took out his lower 5 teeth, placed 6 implants and fabricated a fixed temporary bridge right in the clinic.
The entire procedure took around 3.5-4 hours but almost half of the duration involved preparing the temp bridge which was done
as a lab procedure and hence not in the patient's mouth.
It was long sure but he walked in looking like this:
But walked out with FIXED teeth looking like this:
Imagine not being without teeth for a single day.
This person can eat his normal food and resume his personal and professional life without a hassle.
He had come today for his follow up and he barely had some edema (puffiness) but NO pain or swelling.
in 5-6 month he will
get his permanent teeth but till then he can carry on with his routine.
Someone who follows me here was in the clinic today for his treatment and I showed him this. He encouraged me to post about this online. He said "More and more seniors need to know they have options like
this!. I cannot imagine he walked in with half his teeth missing and walked out with a full set of fixed teeth".
The other option are dentures retained by implants.
The biggest advantage is taht the lower denture, which normally is very tough to hold steady, basically becomes
like a fixed set of teeth. Also the upper denture does not cover the palate and hence makes it much easier to wear and enjoy food.
Not to mention, the patients look at least a decade younger!
Here is an example:
There are many other cases I can share but I think these cases are more typical of what the current 60-80 age group will benefit from.
Like everything else, the cost varies over a wide range and is typically governed by quality of the actual implants, the caliber of the lab
used, and hence quality, the skill and training of the operator and dental situation.
It also varies on the treatment protocol, eg Fixed vs removable, implants placed the same time teeth are taken out versus later, quality of bone etc.
I can assure you that the final
outcome is fantastic!
The patient is able to smile without being conscious, the self esteem receives a HUGE boost, the chewing ability and hence the satiety value plus nutritional benefit of food is tremendous!
There are certain medical conditions which prevent certain patients
from getting implants but they are best discussed individually with the dentist.
I hope this thread has helped shed some light on the possibilities and benefits of dental implants.
GREAT discussion on "Destiny and Hardwork" in @SandeepMall space right now.
Writing a short thread to share my thoughts on the same.
As @onemanush said, your destiny starts right at birth.
If you are born in a small village in Africa versus a wealthy family in Mumbai,
your life path starts at a very different note.
The overall sentiment seems to be that you write your own destiny. Which is directly contradictory to the the sentiment that your destiny is pre written.
Your destiny is pre written when it comes to life and death!
What happens
between those two points in life is a combination of fortune, very different from destiny, and hard work.
A perfect example where HARD WORK was the only difference in the end point of two individuals is the age old Sachin versus Kambli discussion.
I fell in love with #cricket watching the 1985 Ravi Shastri Audi series!
@sourabhsanyal was appearing for his 10th boards during the VVS series! And got yelled at by his dad because when he asked how was the paper he replied “What’s the score?”
The 1996 World Cup was when he truly started following cricket! That just shows he is a true cricket fan because if there is one tournament I would never expect a Pakistan cricket fan to love it would be the 1996 World Cup!
