Despite the torrential rain ⛈️ the turn out was big, showing how strong the resistance is towards the false solutions to tackle #ClimateChange being proposed at the #IUCNcongress.
2/6
The plan to turn 30% of the world into Protected Areas by 2030 (30x30) is a distraction from the real causes of #environmental destruction - instead it puts a price on #nature & allows big business to profit.
We can't trust those destroying nature to protect it... Along with other orgs, we're showing that different solutions exist & already work - ones that are anti-racist, anti-colonial & respect #diversity.
❗ Prince Harry’s charity African Parks confirms multiple abuses, following investigation
🧵
An investigation into reports of atrocities by guards employed by Prince Harry’s charity African Parks has acknowledged that multiple abuses took place, confirming allegations of violence
made by Baka people.
Survival had been calling on African Parks to put a stop to years of abuse by their guards against Indigenous Baka people whose ancestral land has been taken over by Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo, which is managed by African Parks.
African Parks has refused to make Omnia’s report public, nor allowed Omnia to do so.
The root of the problem – which the investigation did not address – is that African Parks continues to cling to a racist & colonial model of conservation which kicks out the Indigenous people...
🚨A member of the Yanomami ppl died after being shot in the head & 2 more were injured in another brutal attack on Saturday by illegal miners, in the Yanomami Uxiu community.
Murders & violence against Indigenous ppl in the area have increased as more & more miners settle there.
The following day a governmental team was also shot at trying to remove illegal miners from the #Yanomami Indigenous Territory, whilst four miners, including a powerful ringleader, were killed in the confrontation.
2/
#Yanomami orgs inc @Hutukara demanded more protection: “Even after yrs of countless complaints to the authorities, when the world is aware of the health crisis & lack of solidarity that our ppl are facing, we’re once again appealing to the Brazilian gov [for more support].”
3/
⚠️ The desperate health crisis unfolding in the Yanomami’s territory hasn’t happened overnight… we’ve been warning the Brazilian authorities about this for years.
1/
Alongside #Indigenous organizations, we’ve been pushing for the removal of more than 20,000 illegal gold miners from Yanomami lands - an invasion that’s increased dramatically since former President Bolsonaro took office in 2019.
2/
The gold miners are destroying the Yanomami and Ye’kwana's livelihoods, spreading disease, killing, raping and terrorizing communities - and they’re now just a few miles from ncontacted Yanomami.

On New Year’s Day, #LulaDaSilva was sworn in as president of Brazil.
Raoni Metuktire, a leader of the Mebêngôkre (Kayapó) people, together with other representatives, walked up the ramp and took part in the ceremony to hand over the presidential sash.
1/
👉 @GuajajaraSonia was named minister of the newly founded Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, whilst @JoeniaWapichana was announced as the next president of FUNAI, #Brazil’s Indigenous affairs agency.
2/
It’s the first time that an #Indigenous woman has been appointed as a minister, and the first time that FUNAI will be presided over by an Indigenous woman.
#Brazil’s Amazon Guardians have been busy protecting their land from illegal invaders – while the authorities encourage the land-grabbers.
It’s a dangerous job & many have been killed. Can you imagine putting your life on the line everyday to protect your home & family?
1/
Their most recent activities include:
👉 Land monitoring in the Arariboia #forest. The Guardians found a large logging camp, stopped the loggers and burned their equipment.
2/
👉 During an expedition they found evidence that a rancher had encroached further into their territory, crossing its border. The Guardians re-opened the trail that marks the border of the #Indigenous territory, as a clear sign to the ranchers to keep out.

The €50,000 KfW Bernhard Grzimek Prize for #conservation will be presented today in Frankfurt.
But should Bernhard #Grzimek really be celebrated as a role model? 🤔
1/
Following his civil service career in Nazi Germany as a member of the SA (Nazi Stormtroopers), Grzimek became a director of a zoo & an animal rights activist.
2/
Grzimek discovered his love for conservation in the #Serengeti, where he:
🔴 campaigned for yrs alongside @FZS_Frankfurt AGAINST the land rights of the Indigenous #Maasai
🔴 “professionalized” the militarized monitoring of Protected Areas
🔴 boosted mass #tourism in the area 3/
