Today, a state court judge in #Oklahoma denied a request for a temporary injunction against several extreme abortion restrictions that will decimate access to abortion across the state and region. The laws take effect on November 1.
The court blocked two abortion bans today, but gave the green light to severe restrictions, including a law that would reduce the number of abortion providers in OK by MORE THAN HALF.
This decision comes over a month after Texas’s six-week abortion ban, #SB8 took effect and eliminated the vast majority of abortion access in the state.
As a result, clinics in OK have reported huge increases in patients traveling from Texas to access care. For instance, an OK clinic reported that two-thirds of the phone calls they receive are now from Texas patients.
“Right now, people in Texas are traveling to Oklahoma and other neighboring states to access abortion," said Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO.
"If these laws take effect, it will decimate access not only in Oklahoma, but in the whole region. We will continue to fight to get these laws blocked in court.”
🚨 #TEXAS UPDATE: We just filed a lawsuit in defense of Dr. Alan Braid, the physician who provided abortion care to a Texas woman beyond the limit under the state’s abortion ban, #SB8.
This lawsuit also asks a federal court to strike down the unconstitutional ban.
In the 33 days that #SB8 has been in effect, abortion access has been decimated in #Texas, but Texans have not stopped needing and seeking abortion care. #BansOffOurBodies#AbortionIsEssential
“I have a duty of care to my patients and, in this instance, I provided that care in violation of #SB8. Every day it is in effect, #SB8 is harming the people of Texas and denying them their constitutional right to abortion, and it must be stopped.” —Dr. Alan Braid

“The right to abortion is rendered meaningless without access.” —@RepMaloney
"Let me be very clear, access to abortion is a freedom that is essential to Americans' ability to control their own bodies and decide their own future.” —@RepMaloney
CASE UPDATE: Last night a federal judge granted our request to block part of a new Arizona abortion law just hours before it was set to take effect. The “reason ban” portion of the law will remain blocked while the case continues.
Arizona has existing abortion restrictions that make it harder for people to access care, including:
❗A mandatory 24-hour waiting period
❗A ban on the use of telemedicine for medication abortion services
❗A law banning advanced practice clinicians from providing abortions
“People should not be interrogated about their reason for seeking an abortion. There are no right or wrong reasons...We will keep fighting this ban and the personhood requirement until they are struck down for good.” Emily Nestler, Center Senior Counsel
HAPPENING NOW: The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on the Supreme Court's shadow docket and the harms of Texas' unconstitutional abortion ban #SB8.
“It’s important to understand that #SB8 was preceded by policies and legislation that reduced access to care by creating medically unnecessary obstructions to health care…#SB8 was the culmination of a decade of erosion of access to abortion health care.” @DonnaHowardTX
"This is about personal freedom and respecting that women know what is best for them, their family, and their destinies. This is about health care and trust in the doctor-patient relationship." —@DonnaHowardTX
#BREAKING: Today the U.S. House of Representatives voted YES for the Women’s Health Protection Act. We are one step closer to a future where we're ALL free to make the personal decisions that shape our lives, futures & families. #ActforAbortionAccess#WHPA
This is the first time in history the House of Representatives is voting on proactive, stand-alone legislation to protect abortion rights. 👏
We currently face a wave of anti-abortion legislation across the nation and a looming Supreme Court case that threatens to undermine #RoevWade. By passing the Women’s Health Protection Act, the House of Representatives has made it clear: enough is enough.
