The 1300s
Venetian moneylenders began to sell debt issues to other lenders and to individual investors; and traded in government securities. They carried slates with information on the various issues for sale & meet with clients, much like a broker does today.

The late 1400s
Belgium (then, Antwerp), became the centre of international trade. Merchants would bring in goods anticipating that prices would rise and earn them a profit. #Bondtrading also occurred during this period.

1472 AD - The world’s first #bank was founded.
Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena S.p.A., known as BMPS or just MPS, is an Italian bank. Located in Tuscany, it is still in operation today.

15th Century AD - One of the earliest events that kicked it all off!
Tuscany, Italy - The famous #Medici family opened banks that charged interest in hidden bills since openly charging interest (usury) was prohibited.

The Dutch East India Co. issued the first #papershares. This exchangeable medium allowed shareholders to conveniently buy, sell and trade their stock with other shareholders and investors.

Amsterdam - the first modern-day #stocktrading is created. The Dutch East India Company is the first publicly-traded company here, and for many years, it is the only company with trading activity on the exchange.

A Japanese Trader invented #Candlestick Patterns to predict price movements in the rice market.

1790 - Birth of the first US #Investment Market
The federal government issued $80Million in bonds to repay Revolutionary War Debt. Two years later, the “Buttonwood Agreement” was signed by 24 stockbrokers and later moved to the Tontine Coffee House for trade.

1800 - The #Gold Standard was invented
The Gold Standard is a monetary system in which the standard economic unit of account is based on a fixed quantity of gold.

The London Stock Exchange #LSE was officially founded! Located in the City of London, England it is one of the oldest exchanges in the world. As of March 2021, the total market value of all companies trading on the London Stock Exchange was £3.8 trillion.

The New York Stock Exchange #NYSE was established! The New York brokers were organized formally as the New York Stock & Exchange Board. It is by far the world's largest stock exchange by the market capitalization of its listed companies.

#Canada developed its first stock exchange in 1861 and it was the largest stock exchange by Market capitalisation.

The Bombay Stock Exchange #BSE was established as “The Native Share and Stock Brokers Association”. BSE is the first-ever stock exchange in Asia.

1878 - #Tokyo Stock Exchange is established
Abbreviated as Tosho or TSE/TYO, it is located in Tokyo, Japan. It is the third-largest stock exchange in the world by aggregate market capitalization of its listed companies & the largest in Asia - as per Wikipedia.

Richard Donchian used a set of rules to buy and sell funds, thus introducing the concept of an #automatedtrading system for the first time.

In the 1980s, the concept of "#rulebasedtrading” grew rapidly. Famous traders like John Henry began to use such strategies thus leading to its popularity.

The early version of the S&P500 is created by Henry Barnum Poor’s company, Poor’s Publishing. The Standard and Poor's 500, or simply the S&P 500, is a stock market index and it is one of the most commonly followed #equity indices.

The S&P500 begins by tracking 90 stocks. Today it tracks the performance of 500 large companies listed on stock exchanges in the #UnitedStates.

#Instinet is founded as the first Electronic Communication Network (#ECN), incorporated as Institutional Networks Corp. It provided computer services & a communications network for automated (anonymous & confidential) buying/selling of equity securities.

In the pre-internet era, #Reuters developed ‘#ReutersDealing' an advanced electronic #Forex trading system - a real-time closed network chat system. It would probably still be in use if the #Internet had not been invented.
