NIGERIAN ECONOMY DEFIES LOGIC

Recently, I spent my evening with a friend who is a Finance Director in one of the leading consumer goods company in 🇳🇬 and we sat down to review the performance of different FMCG in 2021 and it was mixed stories of the good, the better and the ugly
The ugly was the input material prices which were rising due to dollar scarcity and global supply chain crisis and that left the companies with no alternative than to increase prices of goods.

This triggered inflation in Q1.
Last year saw many consumer goods companies increase prices of goods as many as three times.

The most alarming thing was that the more the prices were increased, the more products these organizations were selling.

This was a misnomer experienced by many FMCGs.
It got to a point for one of the multinationals that the parent body was asking brutal questions to the point of threatening to send auditors down to Nigeria to unravel the "fraud" behind these inexplicable results.

You can imagine that aberration.🤔
Many of the parent companies of the multinationals never expected any good result out of Nigeria last year but they were shocked at the YE results.

The good and better results were experienced by all the leading CSDs.
There was a time in the year that demand was more than supply for CSDs yet people were ready to pay cash down ahead of delivery.

Those who were selling cooking oil such as Presco Oil, Okomu oil and PZ Wilmar all had a good 2021.
One of the multinationals who used to have more credit sales than cash sales are now having much more cash sales than credit sales.

Dangote, BUA, Nestle, Airtel and MTN made a combined PAT of 788b NGN and paid 386b NGN in taxes.
The irony of the Nigerian economy is that the GDP figures are not synonymous with the results obtained by many of these companies.

What could be responsible for these? I will share the concluding part of our discussion tomorrow.

I look forward to an intellectual discourse.

STOP COMPARING: STAY ON YOUR LANE!

I had a trip on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on the South Western part of Nigeria some months ago. There was a SUV who was speeding ahead of me. He was a little bit reckless trying to navigate and swerve between vehicles.
Having worked in a company some years back where you are not allowed to travel above 100km/hr, I have made a custom of not exceeding 120km/hr no matter how good the road is.

I watched this SUV till he was out of my sight but I wasn't comparing myself with him.
Rather, I stayed on my lane. Few minutes after, I saw the vehicle at the side of the road with its bonnet opened and I left it behind. Of course, something was wrong with the vehicle and it had to be checked.

This short real life story has its lessons.

POLITICS

Darling, what will you like us to cook tonight?

One of the people in the house shouted, fried chips. The eldest son said, ground rice.

I added my voice, fried chips. We decided to ask one more person in the house and he said, fried chips.

#Politics Image
The other people that could have made their choices known were sleeping

That was how fried chips became the choice food for the night

My eldest son was angry and I told him that next time you lobby people to your side so that you've more people going with your choice

#Politics
The above story shows you how politics gets into the affairs of everything including the office.

Stop saying I don't get involved in politics else you become like my son whose choice wasn't the main choice at the end of the day.

DISCIPLINE: ONE OF THE IMPORTANT INGREDIENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

The world today has a lot of events and activities jostling for our attention and that makes discipline an essential ingredient for our career.

#Thread

Caveat: This picture was taken few years ago.
If we are unable to make a decision for what is important to us as professionals as well as career men and women, we will fall victim of wanting to touch everything and end up not achieving anything.

You need to make a choice for what is most important to you per time.
The marketing professionals have also not helped because every where you turn today, you are being advertised to. Something is beckoning to you to get your attention.

In view of the above, the virtue of discipline has become more important than ever.

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL (FOR MEN ONLY)

While growing up, I saw my father describe my mother as having the same features as that of his mum. In other words, he was trying to say all women are the same.

#MarriageManagement
I felt somehow with those words because I felt my mother is different and she shouldn't be compared with my grandmother. Years later, I read the book: Understanding the Purpose and Power of Woman by Myles Munroe and I saw that women are special creatures created delicately by God
After marriage, I could repeat the words of my father that my wife has some peculiarities like my mother.

Coming down to the title: "You are beautiful", women like to be acknowledged no matter how old and no matter how religious.

THE POWER OF DECISIONS

Decisions make a man. You are a product of the decisions you made years ago. We make decisions on a daily basis and the decisions we make today have impact on where we will be tomorrow and in the years to come.

#management #personaldevelopment
Many years ago, you decided to complete your secondary school education and proceeded to the tertiary institution. You could have decided otherwise but you knew that the consequence of not moving forward your education will not be favourable.

#management #personaldevelopment
Every decision made has consequences. Not making a decision is a decision in itself. Being slow in taking decision is also a decision and all these have varying consequences.
