#Russia's war on #Ukraine - this is the start of the daily thread.
Day 46 begins with both sides claiming they've inflicted significant losses on its opponent. That can only mean the war is hotting up significantly in the east.
Read on...
It's taken me quite a while this morning to log all the claims and counter claims.
#Ukraine says it destroyed a "large column of enemy equipment" heading towards #Izium in the #Kharkiv region.
No significant proof yet on either side; just one photo supposedly from #Izyum so far
1/2 Another nasty development yesterday evening was the reported use by #Russia of "parachute bombs" in #Kharkiv for the first time.
These are purely intended to kill civilians. Let me explain in the next tweet how/why:
When a missile is dropped by parachute (picture in last tweet) it slows the descent. The bomb then explodes above ground, which gives it a bigger blast radius. The warhead if usually packed with metal submunitions, acting like bullets, which travel further, killing civilians
#Ukraine says it's discovered a "pit with the corpses of Russian soldiers" in #Vilkhivka just east of #Kharkiv
Head of Kharkiv State, Oleh Synehubov says they're bodies of troops from the 92nd Brigade. "it's an example of how these scum act even with their own."
No verification
#Russia meanwhile claims it hit 86 military targets in #Ukraine in the last 24 hours.
Among them: two command posts, two ammunition depots, three fuel depots, three installations of multiple launch rocket systems, plus 49 strikes against Ukrainian military equipment.
No proof
It does seem as though #Russia has hit a target in #Zvonetske a small village on the banks of Dnieper river, only about 20km south of the big city of #Dnipro
Russia claims it's the HQ of the Dnipro battalion including many foreign fighters.
#Ukraine says there were no victims. They attributed the attacks to Russia trying to hit transport/communications to instil panic in the newly liberated areas where 🇺🇦 forces have been gaining ground.
Yesterday evening there was a third exchange of prisoners between the two sides.
On this occasion 26 were released by both sides. #Ukraine says Russians released 12 military and 14 civilians. The question is why were civilians being held as POWs?
How is it ok for Russia to establish a No Fly Zone over Donbas region (they did this on 18 March), and yet NATO refused #Ukraine's request to police a NFZ over its sovereign territory?
Meanwhile strange news on the Russian wires from #Mariupol
The de facto Defence Minister of the Kremlin puppet Donetsk People's republic says Ukraine troops trying to flee the besieged city have "captured two foreign ships: Tsarevna + Lady Augusta" holding crew hostage
No proof
A man holding a poster with the word "peace" written on it in different languages, has been arrested by #Russia's goons.
Aleksandr Reshetnev was bundled away to be quizzed in the city of #Tomsk
Solo protests are supposedly still allowed in the Totalitarian state
#Ukraine soldiers celebrate taking down the latest Russian drone "Orlan" which the invading army claimed would be out of reach of Ukrainian weapons.
Troops here used the British "Starstreak" MANPAD
Location unknown.
Some pro-Ukraine channels are publishing documents showing the unrecognised Puppet states of Donetsk and Luhansk are now conscripting ALL males 18-65 for war.
I'm not sure of the veracity of the claims/documents which are easily faked, but there are also witness statements.
A scary moment in #Poland for Ukrainian evacuees today as sirens sounded across the country.
But it's a mark of respect for Polish President Lech Kaczynski who was killed in a plane crash 12 years ago today in Smolensk, Russia. Many Poles still suspect foul play.
In the next few days the number of Russian soldiers killed in #PutinsWar will hit 20,000*
Almost 300 planes/helicopters destroyed now and nearly 2,000 Armoured Personnel vehicles.
I cannot verify where or when, but it's said to be Ukrainians rescuing a cat which had been trapped for some time inside an apartment in the war zone in #Ukraine.
The furry friend's first need? Not food but love!
#Zhytomyr's air defences working well - two separate Russian drones shot down in the last 24 hours over the city.
One small (Orlan) and one big (Orion)
Russia can't even make decent propaganda videos.
In #NovaKakhovka, in #Kherson oblast, this is the size of today's pro-Russian rally.
All the "protesters" are young males looking suspiciously like troops out of uniform. Locals say they arrived in "Z" vans (there is a video)
The Head of #Kharkiv region has confirmed he believes that #Ukraine's military has destroyed most of this huge column.
#Greece has pledged to support #Ukraine in its fight for freedom.
But it seems some locals aren't happy
Remember within the last decade Nazi MPs were elected by Greeks before the extremist "Golden Dawn" was disbanded. It and "Greek Solution" parties have strong links to Russia
A pro-Russian "Z" has appeared in #Dnipro on the Pushkin memorial.
Some of the Soviet Union "Hero cities" of the second World War have been replaced with #Ukraine's new heroic cities of the Russian war.
In #Novosibirsk there's a monument to #Ukraine national hero/poet Taras Shevchenko
At the statue today someone laid 🟡+🔵 flowers as a tribute to @the_ins_ru journalist Oksana Baulina killed in #Ukraine
Also photos of local soldiers who died in the war + the words "maybe enough?
A prize winning Ukrainian writer has been abducted by Russia.
Volodymyr Vakulenko was detained in #Izium about a week ago, according to his ex-wife who says they also took their son Vitalik
In 2014 Vakulenko was wounded by Titushki (paid thugs) during the Revolution of Dignity.
One person's died and 5 Emergency service workers have been injured in bombing in #Dnipropetrovsk today.
Regional Head Mikola Lukashuk, announced the death came in Novopavlovka, reportedly from a cluster munition.
The injuries came in 3 missile strikes on airport infrastructure
#Ukraine's attack on the 8-mile column of Russian gear does seem to have been confirmed from various sources now. Among them, this video from near #Izium in #Kharkiv oblast.
A brave young woman in #Krasnodar has been arrested by Russian police.
Olga Aksenova's crime was laying down on the floor with her hands tied behind her back, next to an advert for #Russia's war. She was replicating the war crimes in #Bucha, #Ukraine
A huge explosion in #Mykolaiv this evening.
There's speculation on chat that Russia has hit one of Ukraine's air defences in the #Nikolaev region.
No official confirmation yet.
Latest reports on the attack in #Mykolaiv (see⬆️) claim the missile was shot down. The wreckage fell into the forest and started a blaze.
I am far from convinced.
#Mykolaiv / #Nikolaev update
I am reading reports saying it's likely the blast hit a saltpeter storage depot near the port at Olvia. This would have caused a huge explosion, more in fitting with the video I posted earlier.
At this point memories of Beirut where a blast ripped apart half the city.
The enigmatic governor of #Mykolaiv still insists there is no major problem
Vitaliy Kim says "we even checked the air for radiation - everything is normal"
He maintains a missile was shot down causing a fire in a forest which was extinguished within an hour.
#Ukraine's defence forces say they shot down 4 Russian helicopters today, plus one Su-34 fighter-bomber plane.
#Kharkiv has been hit again. Reports of at least one missile landing in a residential area.
The so called "Donetsk Republic" releases another propaganda video on Mariupol' showing the bodies of what they say are Ukrainian soldiers.
And guess what?
The fighters just happened to be reading Hitler's autobiography when they died.
Their viewers must have the IQ of a mollusc

Day 48 of #Russia's "military operation" aka genocide of a peaceful neighbouring state.
This is Tuesday's thread with the news and analysis from #Ukraine and beyond.
The big question: have chemical weapons been used in Mariupol' overnight?
Read on...
There is no proof yet, and it's going to be almost impossible to get any, but #Ukraine troops in besieged #Mariupol' claim chemical weapons were dropped by drone onto the Azovstal plant
The first overseas acknowledgment of the allegation has come from UK
Monday. Day 47 of #Russia's illegal and dirty war on #Ukraine with more and more executed civilians being found and rape allegations piling up.
Overnight bombing raids and fighting in the east continued.
All the details in the daily 🧵 updated throughout the day
The attack on transport continues with more Russian missiles targeted on railways during the night.
The Head of Railways released only this photo, while admitting 5 locomotives had been damaged along with some tracks. Thankfully no deaths or injuries. Locations not revealed.
#Ukraine also has Intelligence saying #Russia will attack road connections soon too to further limit supply lines.
With Russia's army massed in the east and south near the Russian border (or the puppet states) in all cases, their supply lines are far easier than in 1st phase
It's Saturday. Day 45 of #Russia's apparent attempt to wipe #Ukraine and its people from the map.
There is no neutrality in such a conflict. If you pretend to be neutral you are condoning the targeting of civilians, the mass slaughter of women and kids.
Here's the daily🧵⬇️
There were far fewer air raid alarms across #Ukraine overnight.
Two people were injured in one Russian missile attack in #Poltava region.
"Infrastructure" was hit in Mirhorod according to authorities.
#Kharkiv had its usual bombardment last night - this is the usual "night music" there
Russian forces have what amounts to a partial blockade of #Ukraine's second city. More of the terrorist forces are gathering over the border with a renewed attempt to capture the city likely⬇️
We've reached 6 weeks of full scale war and arguably #Russia is in a worse position than after Day One in #Ukraine.
This is the daily thread on the major developments and my analysis after 20 years working in Ukraine and studying Putin.
Thanks to everyone for tip-offs. Read on!
Bombing and shelling continued in many Ukrainian cities overnight.
Late yesterday #Ukraine said that #Russia was preparing to surrender #Kherson, the only major city it controls.
The UK's daily intelligence update doesn't add much new information.
Following the horrors of #Bucha, the hints from #Borodyanka - I imagine we will get more from other settlements around #Kyiv today.
The capital's police says they've already recorded 1,200 alleged instances of war crimes committed by Russia.
Here's the daily thread for Day 41 of #Russia's full scale war, massacres, rapes + myriad other crimes and war crimes against #Ukraine
Ukraine, a nation which has never been at war in its short recent history until Russia's illegal invasions in 2014 and February 2022
Read on⬇️
Another night of heavy bombardment is ongoing.
Many cities hearing explosions - but most chat on social networks say the sounds seem like Russian missiles being hit by air defences. It's amazing how soon these guys become weapons audio experts.
