1/ @alexraf, global director of the #FossilFuelTreaty: this panel will offer reflections of activists around the world calling for a fair and equitable phase-out of oil, gas and coal, the main threat to our environment, climate and health🌎
2/ Andrés Gomez from @CensatAguaViva: in Colombia we have a history of #FossilFuels exploitation associated to violence & also to resistance, especially from indigenous peoples who consider oil as the blood of the earth and have had victories #NoAlFracking
3/ We need to fight back with the people in the territories and also with support of the government and imagine a future where we exit #FossilFuels, the structure of Colombia's economy!
4/ Kalo Afeaki: I come from a region of the Pacific called "Period" bec we are like a dot in the world map. We are small but strong. Pacific people are #PacificWarriors. Pacific people are Climate resilient. We are doing our part to protect the world, what are you doing?
6/ @chilledasad100 from @WarOnWant: science is clear on the closing window but also on the root cause of higher vulnerabilities in Global South:the latest #IPCC report mentioned #COLONIALISM for the 1st time. A #FossilFuelTreaty would address the equity issue in energy transition
7/ @lnacpil from @AsianPeoplesMvt: 1st of all, I want to share my solidarity with my sisters of the #Pacific because in the Philippines, our islands are also going to disappear. The cause = the #FossilFuel system which is not about fulfilling people's needs but abt overproduction
8/ 1 of our projects to engage with diff actors in the climate struggle is the Parliamentarians' call for a Fossil Free Future in order to build allies inside governments and shake countries to take real climate action now: fossilfuelfreefuture.org
9/ @MaryMoeonoKolio: in my own home in Samoa, my father has seen his school disappear. We in the #Pacific we are the smaller contributors to the #climatecrisis but the most affected. We are warning governments and we are a driving force!
10/ We in the #Pacific, were the 1st to sign the #ParisAgreement, the first to ban plastics, the first to declare climate emergency and now, we are are proposing an International Court of Justice on fossil fuels!
11/ @Tzeporah, chair of the @fossiltreaty: the world is asking to keep #FossilFuels in the ground and their demand has been ignored by governments in the last 30years! Every gov and companies will argue, here in #Stockholm50 too, that they have "clean oil" as an excuse to expand.
12/ However, the science is clear: we need to stop production of oil, coal and gas. But HOW do we decline? We can't let the market lead. We need governments to have the courage to take actions based on #equity principles. #FossilFuelTreaty: fossilfueltreaty.org
13/ @mitzijonelle from @yacaphilippines: every threat that we face in my country and the whole world is caused by #fossilfuels. Despite that, our governments are expanding and ignoring the need for a global mechanism to ensure a #JustTransition. This is a betrayal.
14/ Without an international focus,#ClimateJustice seems so far away! We are here at #Stockholm50 but what have governments been doing? Is this going to take another 50y? 2022 needs to be the year that international institutions address #FossilFuels. It is their turn to be scared
16/@lnacpil on how we network together: we have not moved the world enough after 50y of climate governance but on the civil society side, we have reinforced our movements with local struggles, national fights, regional and global networks 🌎
17/ @Tzeporah on the issue of colonialism: as a white woman from the Global North, I feel a responsibility to call out my government which does NOT work towards reconciliation! Canada expands #fossilfuels at the expense of indigenous peoples and this is a new form of colonialism!
20/ Ayisha Siddiqa on the link with militarism: the US government spends millions on military forces to protect its #fossilfuel interest. In fact, it is the other way around: oil, gas and coal industry owns our governments!
21/ @chilledasad100: The issue of colonialism is central to address the #climatecrisis and it is important to tell the right stories: we are not only fighting @Shell, we are also fighting the model of capitalism & colonialism based on #FossilFuels extraction!
1/ @alexraf: We’ve heard across all of the panels that the risks of the FF industry are not only risks to our climate goals,we’ve heard about the ways that the FF industry risks our reliance with nature from communities in the Amazon facing continuing logic of the colonizers
2/ @alexraf: the risk of climate extraction is not only to the local community, it’s also to the overall structure of our political economy, and our culture.
@StockholmPlus50@mitzijonelle@xiyebastida@FarzanaJhumu@zuhairkowshik She adds that we need to tell the stories of the communities that are being affected. Everyone in the Global North need to advocate for those in the South who are being targeted by extraction activities.
1/ Svitlana Romanko #StandWithUkraine: The war in Ukraine is not another war. Russia is a threat with high #FossilFuel resources that could be weaponized & used also against other countries.
The #FossilFuelTreaty provides the missing mechanism to phase-out fossil fuel and HOPE!
2/ Sylvie Ndongmo @WILPF, Cameroon: first of all, i am not in #Stockholm50 in person bec I could not get a visa. I was requested to travel to RDC or Nigeria to get a visa which is another example of inequalities and colonial power.
