On #Britain, #Egypt and the passing of Her Majesty #Queen #Elizabeth 1/
Although many in #Egypt expressed sadness for the passing of the Queen, others commented negatively on her legacy, recalling colonialism, the Suez conflict, and the 1956 war 2/
I too, didn’t forget the history of conflicts between the 2 countries.
My late Mum proudly gave me this coin commemorating the withdrawal of British forces in 1956 3/ ImageImage
When she gave me this coin, my mother also stressed on the importance on resist living in the past, with the bitterness, hatred that come with it, unlike what the leftists and pro-Nasser sadly do 4/
It is sad to see the current political confusion among some Egyptians.
There are some who miss the Egyptian monarchy, describe it as the “good old day”, but also rant at the British monarchy 5/
It is also alarming to see most Egyptians assess events with monochromic lens ( black/white— Good/bad), unable to see how life is far from such naive crude assessment.
One can reject colonialism legacy, but admire the British traditions and multiculturalism 6/
Britain has offered opportunities to many Egyptians ( along many nationalities) to succeed and flourish.
@MoSalah is the glaring example.

Why some deliberately forget that? 7/
Big difference between populism and patriotism. The first use the past to feed hatred, negativity to maintain control and power. The second learn from the past, but move on to build better future.
Egypt needs the later, not just in its relation with 🇬🇧 but with others too 8/
One can be proud Egyptian and grateful to its adopted country whether it is Britain or any other, bracing what unit us, building bridges rather than fanning flame of hatred. 9/

#RIPQueenElizabethII
I can’t help but thinking how the future of #Egypt would be if late King Farouk rose above politics, like Queen #Elizabeth did.
Looking at Her Majesty legacy and compare it with Monarchs of the ME, one see how wise and smart she was.
Ruling for 70 years is not a walk in the park

#Thread #Iran
If you just tuned in, you will see how Iran's TL is full of images and videos of protests all over the country following the death of #Mahsa_Amini who was accused of improper wearing of Hijab.
Here are few thoughts. 1/
Since I attended late Shah funeral in Egypt, I developed deep interest in Iran, which increased immensely, after I visited the country years ago. Unlike Egyptians, the people of Iran fully understand the pain of living under an Islamists regime and have no illusions about it 2/
Protests against Islamic Republic is not new:
-1999 Students protests
-2009 Presidential election
-2011/12 protests (influenced by Arab spring)
-2018/19 strikes & protests against economic situation
-2021 uprising of thirsty due water shortage
All failed to uproot the regime 3/

On #Egypt’s Sisi visit to #Qatar:
This visit signals a start of an era of pragmatism— a post Muslim Brotherhood era 1/
Unlike 2017, the #Muslim #Brotherhood as a group, is severely weakened, and becomes irrelevant to the relations between Qatar and Egypt.
Its fans can mock Sisi’s visit to Doha but their barks mean nothing on the ground 2/
What’s on the agenda in Doha is not just economic relations as Islamists claim, but there are several political topics on the agenda, like #Gaza, #Sudan, and most importantly #Libya 3/

Spectacular U-turn in #UkraineRussiaWar

#Ukraine forces have penetrated Russian lines to a depth of up to 70 kilometers in some places; captured over 3,000 square km in the past 5 days —more territory than Russian forces have captured in all their operations since April!
Around Kharkiv, Ukrainian forces have begun to advance not only in the south and east, but also to the north. They are 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the border, according to Ukrainian General

Remembering the #SixDayWar, #Egypt didn’t just lose #Sinai, it lost its progressiveness and opened the gate to #Islamism that slowly controlled its society like a cancer that is hard to uproot.
We regained Sinai, but until we regain our modernity, Egypt will continue to struggle
Immediately after the #SixDayWar, Islamists creeped in, claiming that we lost the war, not because of reckless Nasser, but because #Egypt became godless decedent society. They preached that victory will only happen when women wear hijab, and religiosity dominate! 2/
In 1971, Sadat didn’t just release many Islamists imprisoned under Nasser, he changed the constitution, asserting that Islam is *the* source of all legislations.
This *the* is what Islamists still use to argue for enforcing Sharia on society.

My thoughts are with the brave people of Lebanon voting in the first election since #BeirutExplosion.
They deserve change.
They deserve not be ruled by an Iran-backed militia
They deserve a better future.
#lebanonelections2022
And yes, #Hezbollah is fighting for survival.
For the first time, I saw his followers on Twitter asking people to turn up and vote.
God forbid, are you worried guys?
#lebanonelections2022
Sadly, but not surprising, reports of chaos and corruption dominating #LebaneseElections
