The €50,000 KfW Bernhard Grzimek Prize for #conservation will be presented today in Frankfurt.
But should Bernhard #Grzimek really be celebrated as a role model? 🤔
1/
Following his civil service career in Nazi Germany as a member of the SA (Nazi Stormtroopers), Grzimek became a director of a zoo & an animal rights activist.
2/
Grzimek discovered his love for conservation in the #Serengeti, where he:
🔴 campaigned for yrs alongside @FZS_Frankfurt AGAINST the land rights of the Indigenous #Maasai
🔴 “professionalized” the militarized monitoring of Protected Areas
🔴 boosted mass #tourism in the area 3/
He popularized the idea that #TribalPeoples are invaders on their ancestral lands who are damaging a pristine “wilderness” – he even won an Oscar for it.
4/
He was also concerned with the “overpopulation” myth in Africa & the preservation of “fit cultural peoples” - which Grzimek believed justified the use of a “redemptive injection” for people with disabilities.
5/
#Grzimek was willing to cooperate with dictators such as Idi Amin and Mobutu.
6/
#BernhardGrzimek has probably contributed more than almost anyone to popularizing an image of “African nature” and its “protection” in Germany that's full of colonial and racist ideas.
Despite the torrential rain ⛈️ the turn out was big, showing how strong the resistance is towards the false solutions to tackle #ClimateChange being proposed at the #IUCNcongress.
2/6
The plan to turn 30% of the world into Protected Areas by 2030 (30x30) is a distraction from the real causes of #environmental destruction - instead it puts a price on #nature & allows big business to profit.
#OnThisDay in 1906, #OtaBenga was put on display with the monkeys at the @BronxZoo. The zoo is owned by @TheWCS. Ota Benga committed suicide 10 years later.
1/5
The WCS President Cristian Samper has apologized for the treatment of Ota Benga & the extreme #racism of the organization's founders – only 115 years too late. He challenged the WCS to “do better” and to “never look away whenever and wherever injustice occurs.”
2/5
But they’ve already failed at this challenge; it seems the WCS hasn't changed very much at all.
@TheWCS is supporting illegal evictions in #India’s tiger reserves.

For months, we’ve been reporting alongside Yanomami and Ye’kwana organizations that the invasion of Yanomami lands is getting dramatically worse. #indigenous#humanrights#news
1/9
There are 20,000 illegal miners within the Yanomami’s territory in the #Amazon, who are poisoning rivers with mercury and attacking #indigenous people - as the terrible images of the past few days demonstrate: bit.ly/3hmPP8a
2/9
Bolsonaro's government should be ashamed that Brazil's largest #indigenous territory has been invaded for years. Unfortunately, the opposite is true: #Bolsonaro and his allies encourage #illegal gold miners, perpetuating this tragic scenario.

On the Brazil-Peru border, a group of indig ppl have approached a Manchineri village, in the Mamoadate Indig Territory in BR. The Manchineri say the group are members of the uncontacted Mashco Piro tribe.
"Something must be happening for them to get so close to the 🇧🇷Brazilian side, because in Peru, when [invaders] come across uncontacted Indians, they shoot"
☝️ José Carlos Meirelles, a government agent who specializes in protecting the lands of #UncontactedTribes.
