/29. It’s day eleven of #COP27 and it was a busy day in #SharmElSheikh with press conferences by @CANIntl and the G77 and China, the #PeoplesPlenary, a @COP27P event on Cultural Heritage, an HoD meeting on the cover decision and #LossAndDamage side events throughout the day. 🧵
/29. During the event, @nusrat_naushin highlighted that in areas where intense saltwater intrusion is happening Non-Economic #LossAndDamage is taking place: “#Women and small children are bearing the brunt. People are losing their hair, women are having gynaecological issues.”
/29. From @farhanaclimate who asked us to think about “Who's causing the change, who experiencing the change and who is being forced to accept it.” in the context of addressing #LossAndDamage.
/29. And from Queen Quet of @GullahGeechee nation: “We don’t want to be defined by #LossAndDamage. Why not call us by what we are cultural heritage communities.”
/29. During the press conference Nabeel Munir, made it clear that: “If we cannot get a political signal 30 years later, then what are we doing? If we don’t get a #LossAndDamage fund, this will not be a successful COP.”
/29. Whilst @RRegenvanu of #Vanuatu made it clear that it is possible to set up a #LossAndDamage fund at #COP27: “The #LossAndDamage fund is something that can be done now as an operating entity under the financial mechanism of the @UNFCCC.”
/29. Also this morning the #PeoplesPlenary took place with representatives of #CivilSociety from all parts of the world and across movements and campaigns coming together in Plenary Ramses.
/29. At noon a Head of Delegation (HoD) meeting was convened on the cover decision. The @COP27P has released a non-paper of elements earlier in the day as the basis for discussions.
/29. Some developing countries asked for the cover decision to include the call for a #LossAndDamage fund to be established at #COP27. Other Parties said that the outcome under the agenda item should not be pre-judged while bilaterals are taking place.
/29. During the event @Alpha_Djalon of the #NewGeneration of Young Negotiators was awarded a $50K USD grant from @LossDamageYouth with funding from @scotgove for a coastal project in #Guinea to be implemented by Green Transformation 2050.

/29. Speaking on behalf of @AOSISChair H.M. Molwyn Joseph of #AntiguaAndBarbuda said, "Why should I be pushed to go to the @UN to stand up and ask for charity? Ask for people to give donations. This cannot be an acceptable solution for any Small Island States at this time.”
/29.On why a #LossAndDamage fund or facility is the only possible outcome of #COP27, Malcom Stufkens of #Honduras spoke on behalf of @AilacCC saying:. “It is clear that who is most suffering and who is bearing the cost for #LossAndDamage are the most vulnerable”.
/29. Speakers included Saul Luciano Liuya, a Peruvian farmer who has taken #Germany energy company @RWE_AG to court for causing #LossAndDamage to the glaciers which he depends on for his livelihood. “The companies have polluted and we are suffering the consequences in Peru.”
/29. We also heard from Cesar Rodriguez-Garavito who explained that: “Litigation can serve as a nudge for negotiators, it keeps the pressure on governments and hopefully on corporations as well.” in the context of delivering #LossAndDamage finance under the @UNFCCC and beyond.
/29. From Noah Walker of @Germanwatch who stressed that “In principle it is possible to hold major emitters responsible for all types of #LossAndDamage caused by the #ClimateCrisis.”
/29. And from Hafij Khan, Loss and Damage negotiator for the @LDCChairUNFCCC: “Our demand, we need to establish a #LossAndDamage finance facility at #COP27. We are not asking too much, our vulnerable communities, our ecosystems need immediate response.”
/29. You can watch the full event here:
/29. Throughout the day informal discussions and bilaterals on funding arrangements for #LossAndDamage took place. This evening the facilitators indicated they had made room available for exchanges between Parties and groups.
/29. We are told that the co-facilitators are planning to release a text tonight. Interventions from #AntiguaAndBarbuda on behalf of @AOSISChair and #Colombia on behalf of @AilacCC indicate that Parties are concerned that they have not yet received a text.
