#cdnpoli 🧵@JustinTrudeu
does NOT set #fueloilprices and @PierrePoilievre
knows that. We live in a democracy, not a totalitarian state. The price of oil is set in the global marketplace so the supply/demand balance determines the price of O&G products around the world.
The Canadian government has constitutional authority to regulate gasoline prices only in an emergency. However, provinces and territories can regulate prices, and Quebec and the Atlantic provinces do so. consumerscouncil.com
@JustinTrudeau does NOT set #groceryprices and @PierrePoilievre knows that. They result from factors that include yields, wildfires, drought, global supply chain problems and grocery chain price gouging, etc. Implying otherwise is #misinformation.
@JustinTrudeau is not responsible for #housingsupply and @PierrePoilievre knows that. Provincial & municipal governments dictate how & where housing is developed and managed. They determine subdivision & zoning, how much housing is zoned for, where it is sited & building codes.
Lack of #housingsupply is the prime culprit behind housing affordability woes. For 2 decades NIMBY's have prevented more supply as they did not vote for mayors & councillors who promote either increased density in existing residential areas or what's referred to as "urban sprawl"
@JustinTrudeau doesn't set #mortgagerates or #interestrates@PierrePoilievre knows that. They are individually set by each bank. When rates are moved by one, other banks follow suit. The prime rate is based on what the Bank of Canada (BoC) sets as their overnight target rate.
While the Bank of Canada (BoC) takes steps to curb the #costofliving, we can all make changes to stay on track financially. A Home. For Everyone: The Liberal Housing Plan via @YouTube
The World Bank’s annual Doing Business rankings find that our low level of regulations, lack of corruption, and access to finance (among other things), make this country the third best in the world for entrepreneurs who want to launch a new company. archive.doingbusiness.org/en/doingbusine…
The right-wing Heritage Foundation in Washington ranks Canada as one of the most free economies in the world, citing our government integrity, low taxation levels and fiscal health.
Canada’s economic freedom score is 76.6, making its economy the 15th freest in the 2022 Index. Canada is ranked 1st among 32 countries in the Americas region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages.
Standard & Poor's #creditrating for Canada stands at AAA with stable outlook. Moody's credit rating for Canada was last set at Aaa with stable outlook. Fitch's credit rating for Canada was last reported at AA+ with a stable outlook. tradingeconomics.com/canada/rating
Canada is one of the world's largest economies and is currently at rank 9. Calculated per inhabitant, taking purchasing power parity into account, then Canada ranks 24th in the list of the richest countries. Inflation in Canada in 2021 was around 3.40%. worlddata.info/america/canada….
1/2 Economic Outlook - Canada. Growth in real GDP is projected to slow from 3.2% this year to 1% in 2023 before strengthening to 1.3% in 2024. Higher borrowing costs will weigh on consumer spending while export growth moderates in near term amid deteriorating conditions abroad.
2/2 Softer aggregate demand will relieve pressure on capacity, aided by continued recovery in non-housing investment. oecd.org/economy/canada…
1/3 Canada's debt-to-GDP ratio in 2022 is less than one third of the average among G7 countries. The IMF expects Canada to have the 2nd strongest economic growth in the G7 in 2023, projecting that real GDP in Canada will expand by 3.3 percent in 2022 and 1.5 percent in 2023.
2/3 Canada is expected to have the lowest total #governmentdeficit as a percentage of GDP in the G7 this year—a track Canada is forecast to maintain for the next three years. Canada is also expected to have the lowest #netdebtburden as a share of GDP in the G7.
3/3 Consistent with the recent OECD projections Canada will continue to be a leader in the G7, with the smallest deficit- and net debt-to-GDP ratios. canada.ca/en/department-…
1/3 Canada is a diverse multicultural society where good intentions bind us in a commitment to & listen to various POVs and celebrate our differences without responding to what we don't like to hear with #hatespeechlaws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-46/…
2/3 Promoting divisiveness through #fearmongering and #ragebaiting while disingenuously claiming an intent to unite is a low bar for any politician to set. @PierrePoilievre cannot limbo under the bar he's laid on the ground. @PierrePoilievre's baseless attacks on Trudeau's govt
3/3 claiming they are divisive is hypocritical evidence of his aim to divide Canadians to gain power over us. The finger of blame & shame for lowering the bar for civil political communication reveals @PierrePoilievre
's political opportunism & points that finger back at him.
1/2 No stateman with exemplary leadership qualities would ever affect the behaviours of a petulant child, yet this is what we are witnessing and it's coming from a #libertarian sheltering among the motley crew under the "conservative" CPC umbrella who aims to gain power over us.
2/3 The goal of #conservatism is to create a small govt supporting gatekeepers for a small wealthy class with a vast underpaid hardworking underclass underneath them creating profit for them through never-ending growth, without environmental constraints and consumer protection.
3/3 Libertarians like @PierrePoilievre want to achieve that goal shared with #conservatives by first burning society to the ground so that an anarchic free market system doesn’t constrain the very rich, very white men from controlling the economy and the workers who generate it.
The majority of Canadians didn't blockade supply chains or occupy the national capital for a month-long party and bitch-in clearly designed from the outset to be an attack on our PM @JustinTrudeau under the guise of a mandate protest that was identical to the US border mandate.
@JustinTrudeau 1/2 “The Government of Canada and the United States have now made being vaccinated a requirement to cross the border. This regulation is not changing so, as an industry, we must adapt and comply with this mandate,” said CTA president Stephen Laskowski.
2/2 “The only way to cross the border, in a commercial truck or any other vehicle, is to get vaccinated.” Canadian Trucking Alliance Statement to Those Engaged in Road/Border Protests cantruck.ca/canadian-truck…
🧵@PierrePoilievre is the classic bad actor fingerpointing when the finger points back to him. His attacks on objective CBC journalists are baseless. Most Canadians get news from American-owned PostMedia outlets that are right-leaning promoters of conservative POV.
CBC’s straight news reporting is consistently low-biased, factual, and covers both sides of issues. Editorial positions lean slightly left and rate high for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a clean fact-check record. mediabiasfactcheck.com/cbc-news-canad…
Postmedia outlets have right-leaning editorial bias often and publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favour conservative causes. postmedia.com/brands/#brands…
🧵 "Nearly a year after the start of Canada’s 2022 #FreedomConvoy—a series of protests and blockades that brought together a wide variety of #farrightactivists and #extremists, as well as ordinary Canadians who found common ground with the aggrieved message of the organizers ...
the question of whether and to what degree foreign actors were involved remains largely unanswered. This paper attempts to answer some of those questions by providing a brief but targeted analysis of #Russia’s involvement in the Freedom Convoy via #media and #social media.
The analysis examines Russian involvement in the convoy through the lenses of overt state media coverage, state-affiliated #proxywebsites, and overlap between #Russianpropaganda and #convoycontent on social media.
"The plot of the populist story is simple, unchanging, and melodramatic: Life consists of a perpetual struggle between “common people” and the elites who exploit them. The former are noble, virtuous, and righteous;
the latter are corrupt, arrogant, and self-serving. The key to eradicating social ills and injustices lies in helping the people recognize their true enemies and mobilize to defeat them." ...What populist rhetoric adds to the mix is fear, outrage, and an all-consuming urgency.
If you're eligible for the #BCclimateactiontaxcredit, you'll receive the credit payment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The credit payment is combined with the federal goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit into one quarterly payment.
#BCclimateactiontaxcredit payments are issued four times a year in July, October, and January usually on the fifth day of the month. The B.C. climate action tax credit payments are non-taxable so you don't include it as income when you file your income tax return.
If your adjusted family net income is above the threshold amount, the #BCclimateactiontaxcredit is reduced by 2% of the adjusted family net income above the threshold until the credit becomes zero. See here for specifics and details on the alpha.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/ta…
