💥Debt Cancellation - Possible for Germany in 1953, not possible for the Global South today?!💥
Mon, 27 Feb, will be the next global action day of #DebtForClimate with actions happening around the world on a historic date for debt cancellation! #LondonAgreement1953
We would like to remind you of what we're doing and why, and welcome everyone to join us! 👇
➡️ 11:00 a.m. rally @Ministry of Finance in Berlin
➡️ 19:00 p.m. panel discussion with MAPA-activists @Mehringhof, Gneisenaustraße 2A
🎉 And we have reserved some surprises of course!
Why is 27 Feb so important?
27 Feb 2023 will be the 70th anniversary of Germany's debt cancellation after the 2nd World War, as agreed upon in the #LondonAgreement1953, which partially led to the country's "Economic Miracle".
In that agreement, over half of all of the debt Germany owed from before, during and after WWII was cancelled! And yet today Germany sits at the negotiation tables as a major boycotteur with some of the same countries that allowed Germany's debt to be relieved,
... such as Pakistan, Argentina, Sambia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and today are highly indebted themselves. These countries are at the same time hit hardest by the climate crisis, a crisis they have not caused. #LondonAgreement1953 #DebtForClimate
The main reason why we don't see this kind of debt cancellation happening today for the Global South is neocolonialism, which exerts a lot of its power through debt.
On Monday, February 27th, we will remind everyone that cancelling debt is possible. #DebtForClimate #DeudaXClima
We will remind all that not doing it right now for the Global South to allow for a just and self-determined transition to happen, is a political decision. One month prior to the action, we challenged the German Finance Minister to stand by his promise he gave us last year.
He said to us, that he would take a stand for debt cancellation for the Global South at the IMF&WB meeting in October - which he did not do - and meet MAPA activists from #DebtForClimate to talk about debt cancellation for real.
He blatantly dismissed this request, stating there was no ‘gain in knowledge’ to be expected from talking to us. This just fuels the fire in our voices to show him our collective response on Monday!!
In the evening, we are organizing a panel where you can get to know #DebtForClimate more personally and discuss with us, representatives of the @BlackEarthBer and the Workers and Youth Relief Campaign Pakistan, why debt cancellation is an essential step towards climate justice.
English & German interpretation provided.
Let’s make this historic date for debt cancellation a historic day of debt cancellation for the Global South to enable a self-determined and just transition!
2/14 History taught us how intelligent debt policy works. February 27, 2023, marks the 70th anniversary of the cancellation of 🇩🇪’s debt. This contributed decisively to the reconstruction of a heavily war-torn country. erlassjahr.de/themen/londone…#DebtForClimate#LondonAgreement1953
3/14 Through the #LondonAgreement1953, signed on February 27, 1953, during the the age of bloc confrontation, the young 🇩🇪 nation was closely tied to the Western defense alliance. #DebtForClimate#CancelTheDebt

On Feb 27, we will take to the streets in 🇩🇪 and in front of German embassies worldwide!
This day marks the 70th anniversary of the debt cancellation 🇩🇪 received after #WW2 in the #LondonAgreement.
Here is a little history lesson that you may not have heard in school:
🧵👇[1/18]
Post-war 🇩🇪 was a heavily indebted country:
there was pre-war debt, consisting of outstanding reparation payments from WW1 & private debts of German banks & companies (standstill debt), the amount of the debt made by the Nazi Government (Konversionskasse) and post-war debt👇[2/18
Bear in mind that the #DeNazification of 🇩🇪 was never properly done: major powerful figures from the Third Reich remained in influential political & economic positions after the war, and were able to build their businesses also due to the outcome of the #LondonAgreement.👇[3/18]
1/12: YOUR GREED, OUR #DEATH: #ClimateDebt is killing us!
📢“We as a country and as a region did not start this war against nature. We did not provoke it. The war has come to us.” #DebtForClimate
🧵👇
2/12: The richest tenth is responsible for almost half of all carbon emissions…
… ‼️Whereas the poorest half are only responsible for a tenth of #emissions. #DebtForClimate#DeudaXClima

💥BREAKING: Dozens of climate justice activists disrupted the #OilandMoney conference, a summit of fossil fuel companies, this morning at the @ICParkLane in London this morning.
The grossly named Oil & Money conf changed its name to Energy Intelligence Forum but obviously no energy intelligence is taking place, as the International Energy Agency warned that no new #fossilfuel projects can be built if we are to limit #globalheating to 1.5C.
The action Sunday was packed with people in Asia, Africa, Europe, North & Latin America who can't accept crushing debt that is destroying communities & planet.
The coming days we'll rise up & confront financial power! #DebtForClimate#DeudaxClima
