⓿This tweet storm isn't about the symptoms: Trump, Brexit, UN, Bitcoin scaling, etc—it is about systemic problems facing western society.
❶I'm challenged by "majoritarianism" beliefs of others: a) a plurality win is not a majority b) 50% +1 majority is 100% lack of consensus.
❷Greg Slepak @taoeffect of @Group_Income writes in detail about flaws in May's Theorem about majority rule: groupincome.org/2016/09/miscon…
❸In @taoeffect's analysis majority rule is best for small groups for regular, low-stakes reversible decisions. groupincome.org/2016/09/deprec…
❹Related to the problems of majority rule is that Arrow's Paradox proves that there is no perfect voting system: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow's_i…
❺Collectively we must require consent of the governed. But large # number of possibilities in spectrum of consent: lifewithalacrity.com/2015/09/a-spec…
❻There are many systems for collective social choice — we need to explore more & improve them.

❼One insight is that we often confuse deliberation & voting systems. 1st we need better deliberation, then pick voting system to support it.
❽Another insight is that simple one-person/one-vote approach is flawed when voting results affect different people differently—Proportional?
❾A last insight is the utility of "sortition" AKA a random sample election. This is the original Athenian democracy: wired.com/2012/05/st_ess…
➓The US founders knew of these problems & applied the best known 18th-century solutions. It is the 21st century now & we need to do better!៚
∑ ❶-➓: 👎 majoritarianism, 🖕plurality win,🤞majority vote in small groups, 👍 consent, 👍 deliberation, ❓one-person/one-vote, 👍 sortition.
Arrow's Paradox is more about majority voting systems. I'd like to see more research on supermajority (and even super-minority) voting.
I'm crossing the beams here, but PBFTs are fault tolerant to (n-1)/3 i.e. 67% for large n. Related to supermajorities in voting systems?
Supermajorities should be required in more systems, but there is also a case for minority voting. Low impact & reversible 33% to approve?
