Democracy thread. Well worth reading. Impact of abuse and harassment of elected officials is a particularly pernicious aspect of modern life
It happens to all of us, but from what I've seen, that which is directed at women is on another level. And specifically targeted at gender.
That's just sick, bullshit and needs to be called out Every. Single. Time.
Because you'll scare/abuse away the people that care. The people who are in it to try hard to improve lives.
In fact, it's a pretty surefire way to ensure you'll get a stinking rotten less-democratic process.
And developing a thick skin isn't the answer. Thick skins lead to thick decisions.
So we need to recreate our democracy in the shape of something a bit more collegiate. Electors partner with the elected.
And I hope there are plenty of good candidates out there to make it happen. Because you've got your work cut out for you.
It's not the only reason I'm stepping down this time (in balancing work, council and life, one always loses out)...
But I'd be lying if I said the constant assumption of malign intentions or corrupt interests, wasn't a factor.
So over to the next intake. Do it better than me, please.
