That this RW talking point keeps getting repeated -- now from the WH podium! -- makes me insane. Thus, a rant.
Chicago USED to have a handgun ban. It was struck down in 2010, as were all similar bans, in the wake of DC vs Heller.
Many other anti-gun measures, such as a ban on gun shops, were subsequently voided by the courts. dnainfo.com/chicago/201510…
Meanwhile, the city itself borders the state of Indiana, WI is an hour away, and of course downstate IL has always had much looser gun regs.
So there's a ready supply of guns flowing into the city, replacing those few seized by police. mic.com/articles/12784…
So: Chicago DOESN'T have very strict gun laws, and when it did, they were ineffective because of neighboring states.
So I'm sure people who make this point advocate for uniform Federal restrictions for gun sales, right? Oh, they don't? Well, then what?
Answer: Nothing. They suggest no solutions. Instead, they use the ongoing tragedy of Chicago gun violence to justify continued inaction.
Gun violence in Chicago is an ongoing horror. If all you have to say is that it justifies your prejudices, have the decency to shut up.
Rant over. Back to fart jokes.
