Just had my first direct kick from #Brexit. An international funding bid that I was part of has had to exclude us because of Brexit 1/3
…the risk of including a UK university could have put the overall bid at risk. I know I’m far from alone, but it hurts. 2/3
…and it’s real. Proper research lost. Researchers’ opportunities lost. We’re no longer part of something that was great for research. 3/3

And please, Brexiters, stop with this ‘it’s all because Theresa May is a Remainer that we’re in this mess’. It’s farcical. Firstly, Theresa May was only ever the most reluctant of Remainers. She barely campaigned - and her career to date makes clear why. 1/n
It has been characterised primarily by careerism, authoritarianism and xenophobia - none of which fit the Remainer profile. The xenophobia, in particular, is distinctly the reverse of a Remainer - and it is perhaps the most important element of her career throughout. 2/n
Her time as Home Secretary. Those vans. The Immigration Act 2014. Her time as PM and the immigration policy set out last month. Her many speeches about human rights - the infamous CatGate. They all point in the same direction - and it’s not a Remain direction. 3/n

At the risk of being attacked from all sides, a few short words on Brexit and the Labour Party. One thing I can see is that, in general, *both* sides of the argument have their hearts in the right place. Both want something positive in left wing terms. 1/
The Labour people advocating remain, don’t do so to protect their privilege, they don’t do so from ivory towers and to try to stop a genuine left wing government. Very much the opposite. They do so because they think Brexit makes a left wing government’s life much harder. 2/
For most, it’s a genuine concern that Brexit will harm exactly the people and institutions that Labour should protect. It will harm the NHS, cripple social care, raise food prices (which hit the poor the hardest) and so forth. It will make it much harder to reverse austerity 3/

We Brits have got to stop this massive exercise in self-delusion. We’re not special. We’re not better than anyone else. We’re no less corrupt, not better at trade. Our history isn’t better. Our empire wasn’t better than other empires. We didn’t win the wars on our own.
We didn’t end slavery on our own - our hands are steeped in the blood of slaves. We didn’t invent industry on our own. Our scientists aren’t better than everyone else’s scientists. We didn’t invent democracy. We didn’t bring freedom to the world.
Our music, art and literature isn’t the only stuff worth listening to, looking at or reading. Let’s just stop thinking we’re so special. Enjoy our stuff - but respect the rest.

Irrespective of my politics, I still believe in open, frank and honest debate and acting by democratic consensus. The ERG have none of these qualities. They are liars and frauds to a man.
Moreover, I believe in good government by consent. The ERG are not interested in consent. They have hijacked the Brexit mandate to ram through an economic agenda that would never in a million years win as a manifesto commitment.

Both the problem, and the failure to address it, is writ large in May's deal.

Officially UK is NOT joining a customs union....but in the absence of unicorns we clearly are.

Either via the Backstop or when its clear 'other arrangements' dont exist to fix the Irish border /2
Unfortunately May never had the courage to confront her Brexiteers over this fact. She fudged in Lancaster House, and kept fudging.

Recall this time last year, as the Irish reality dawned, senior peeps like @DLidington were flying kites on this.

Quick #Brexit thread on why the Withdrawal Agreement is taking so long to pass Parliament.

At the first run at the meaningful vote in December, 163 MPs spoke.

69 Conservative MPs stood up - but only 27 spoke in favour of the deal, including the frontbench ministers (who must)!
This understates a lot of support for the Withdrawal Agreement in Parliament (because of the payroll vote @addadc is so fond of).

But without the DUP, who remain opposed to the backstop, it is unclear where more support could emerge besides a handful of rebels or independents.
If the Withdrawal Agreement fails (as expected), the PM said there's a real chance of no deal or no Brexit. So what did MPs think?

Some didn't say. But there was massive resistance to the idea of no deal while a significant number (including Tories) backed a 2nd referendum

The EU's guidelines for transition would mean all the obligations but no representation for the UK in the first 21 months after #Brexit.

More strikingly, it would put it in a worse position than Norway in terms of sovereinty. Here are five striking differences:
1. For every EU law, the EEA decides whether it has 'EEA relevance', i.e. for the single market. If not, or only partially, EEA countries only have to adopt it partially or not at all.

The UK will have to accept all EU law during transition, even if it is not relevant to the SM
2. EEA countries can agree with the EU on derogations when implementing EU law, e.g. geographical application, institutionals adjustments, exceptions.

No of EEA derogations until 2012:
Norway: 55
Iceland: 349
Liechtenstein: 1056

No option for derogations foreseen for the UK.
