And please, Brexiters, stop with this ‘it’s all because Theresa May is a Remainer that we’re in this mess’. It’s farcical. Firstly, Theresa May was only ever the most reluctant of Remainers. She barely campaigned - and her career to date makes clear why. 1/n
It has been characterised primarily by careerism, authoritarianism and xenophobia - none of which fit the Remainer profile. The xenophobia, in particular, is distinctly the reverse of a Remainer - and it is perhaps the most important element of her career throughout. 2/n
Her time as Home Secretary. Those vans. The Immigration Act 2014. Her time as PM and the immigration policy set out last month. Her many speeches about human rights - the infamous CatGate. They all point in the same direction - and it’s not a Remain direction. 3/n
Most importantly, no Remainer would ever have come up with the ‘red lines’ that Theresa May did from the start, red lines that have hampered negotiations and caused much of the mess that the current ‘deal’ provides. So no, it’s not her being a remainer that’s the problem. 4/n
Furthermore, she’s had prominent Brexiters (even Brexiteers) in her cabinet also from the start, and in key position. Those Brexiteers - and the Brexiteers outside the cabinet, like Rees-Mogg - have been conspicuously incapable of putting together a coherent plan either. 5/n
They’ve continued with ideas fit only for dodgy columns in the Telegraph, not plans that actually make sense, and talking absolute garbage - direct lies - about the Irish Border, about food prices, etc etc. They haven’t come up with anything to indicate they have anything. 6/n
So no, the problem isn’t that Theresa May’s a Remainer. It’s either that there *is* no Brexit solution, or that the Tories are all totally incompetent. Personally I suspect the former very strongly. The latter, of course, does not contradict the former.... /ends
