Civil Servants are work in bureaucracy, based on merit, cannot be fired for political reasons. /1
Pros of the civil service: administration and enforcement of the laws is ideally neutral and competent /2
We created the Civil Service cuz of corruption and gross incompetence of "spoils system" in 1880s (& job seeker killed Prez Garfield)/3
Downside of civil service: President, as head of exec branch, has less control over administration of the laws than title implies/4

Most primaries in the US narrow the field of candidates, but do not elect anyone to office.
Primaries were created by the states in the early 1900s following Progressive reforms to take power from party elites /2

It comes from the Constitution: The President “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” Article II, Section 3
From 1801 to 1912, it was delivered as a paper letter, and read aloud by a clerk to the Congress. The president didn't give a State of The Union Speech regularly until 1933.

FWIW we professional political scientists call that logic the “myth of the independent voter.” Read on... /1
In reality, the vast majority of voters have made up their mind about which party best represents their interests, values, and identity. They vote for that party most of the time. (That’s one of the many reasons it’s hard for third parties to break in—see our previous thread). /2
Many voters treat parties like brands that they can trust and remain more or less loyal to down the ballot. Seeing a "D", "R", "L", "G" or other label next to a candidate's name gives voters - particularly low information voters - a shortcut to help in their decision-making. /3

So, here’s a thing that has happened – I just got fired from Marvel. Taken off issues 4 and 5 of SHADOW OF VADER, and taken off an as-yet-unannounced SW book.

This might be a long thread, so apologies in advance.
(I hesitate to talk about this, because honestly, it gives the Worst Possible People a win, something they’ve wanted for a while. But I also feel like I’ve long held to honesty and forthrightness, and I don’t feel like lying when people realize I’m not on these books anymore.)
To rewind a little bit, when SW: AFTERMATH came out, I assume most know but maybe you don’t, I put some ahh, elements in there (LGBT characters) that were not received well by a certain subset of fandom.

Having finished The Authoritarians, it's time to start a new thread of #IanLivetweetsHisResearch. Today I am finally getting past the introduction of How Propaganda Works by Jason Stanley.
Having slogged through some proper academic writing in my day, Stanley's writing is blessedly accessible. But after Altemeyer's light tone and constant dad jokes, Stanley's reads as pretty dry.
So far the introduction is full of a lot of quotations about the nature of democracy, from Victor Klemperer to Elizabeth Anderson to Plato. OF COURSE Plato.
