Yesterday, Google briefly carried tweets with dubious info about Texas shooting suspect Devin Patrick Kelley. Here's more on our reaction….
Gizmodo documents some of the tweets that appeared. The story gizmodo.com/once-again-goo… does have our statement, but here's more from us....
Our official statement. In short, tweets from Twitter but Google’s algorithm ranks them. Given issues yesterday, we want to improve that.
Bottom line: we want to show authoritative information. Much internal talk yesterday on how to improve tweets in search; more will happen.
In particular, we took deserved criticism after our Top Stories section carried misleading information after the Las Vegas shooting….
With Las Vegas, searches for someone’s name brought up incorrect rumors they were involved with the shooting. theverge.com/2017/10/3/1641…
This only happened for a few thousands who searched for his name, not for general searches relating to the Las Vegas shooting. Still....
Bottom line: Top Stories should have correct info. So with the Texas shooting, we especially watched to see if Top Stories got it right…

Top Stories with correct information appeared above tweets that, for a short time, had incorrect info. We think that helped, but…
The tweets we carry in results should reflect useful information. We're not happy with ourselves they didn't, even if for a short time…
Right now, we haven't made any immediate decisions. We'll be taking some time to test changes and have more discussions, but…
Not just talk. Google made changes to Top Stories and is still improving those. We'll do same with tweets. We want to get this right.
We also had issues beyond tweets in search. I hope to share more about what we're doing there. We want to get those right, as well.
I've also made a Twitter moment compiling all these tweets into one place: twitter.com/i/moments/9277…
