1. If you’re asking which crypto coin(s) you should own, I ask back “why do you want to own crypto coins?”
2. If you answer “To get rich quick.” my answer is “Any coins, but you can also get poor quick too, because it’s just gambling.”
3. But if you answer “Because I want to own a piece of a potential future where I can control my money and send it anywhere, anytime; to know that it can't be taken from me; to know that is secured by math; and to know that it can't be undermined by politicians or businessmen.”
4. then my answer is simple: “Bitcoin.”
5. I liken what is going on now to a space race. There are competing factions playing in this race. Some (very few actually) are genuinely trying to build spacefaring technology.
6. Others see the rush of dollars and are out to make a quick buck. They care not about whether they destroy one of the genuine builders’ efforts.
7. Those of us who study this space all know there can be no global decentralized currency on a blockchain alone.
8. We know we will need continued research and development to build this tech to meet global volume and speed requirements.
9. We all know that there is now also a hype of global scale, covered by the global media, about fortunes being made in very short times.
10. But even though bitcoin is valued very highly today, it does not have to be valued highly today to achieve the long term goals it is actually working towards.
11. While one thousand other coins battle it out to be a winner of the dead end on-chain-only, highly centralized, highly vulnerable crypto coin-du-jour race,…
12. slow and steady progress on bitcoin, based in a scientific approach to development, and ignoring false marketing claims of other coins, is what will lead to a realization of the vision of secure internet money at global scale.
13. Bitcoin is where the principles of this goal are and where the developers are.
14. It moves more slowly because it moves with scientific method and in the direction of its long term goal.
15. It moves forward even while it is attacked from all around by outsiders and alt-coins that don’t have any long term future prospects.
16. It moves steadily towards the goals of the project – global, reliable currency at global scale, for everyone.
17. Bitcoin’s participants and contributors know that there is no shortcut.
18. Shortcuts like a press release or interview with the media are not high quality, bug free, secure software.
19. A hastily developed fork of bitcoin is not itself high quality, secure or bug free and it certainly isn’t continuing to be developed with bitcoin’s standards.
20. Bitcoin, however, is genuine open source software developed by hundreds of collaborators; all participating in extensive peer review and testing; developing the state of the art in this technology
21. and doing so with the highest standards of maintaining uptime and security towards realizing the goal of money you can trust that cannot be corrupted...
22. Money that won’t depreciate to serve the short term interest of a politician or powerful cartel.
23. Money whose traits don’t change suddenly at the whim of a developer or businessman’s panic attack.
24. Money that when you possess it, you and only you control it.
25. So I ask again, “why do you want to own crypto coins?”
