I wrote about new juvenile justice data for the last fiscal year.
This is the first statewide data for reformer prosecutors elected in Florida. Where reformers were elected— Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa—children aren't going to adult court as much. jacksonville.com/news/metro/201…
I've got a few statewide data requests for the same time period I'm waiting on so I can track other areas, but in the meantime, this was a quick daily about new DJJ data. jacksonville.com/news/metro/201…
Statewide, the rates of children charged in juvenile and in adult court fell. It fell faster in the circuits where reform candidates won (4-Jacksonville, 9-Orlando, 13-Tampa).
If you look at the black youth population divided by black youth who interact with the justice system, Pensacola (1st circuit) and St. Petersburg (6th) stand out.
The new juvenile data is online here in Tableau form: djj.state.fl.us/research/repor…
Another crazy datapoint: The 1st Circuit (Pensacola) had 15 children sent to adult court over misdemeanors. That number is astonishing.
32% of Florida kids who went to adult court over a misdemeanor came from a circuit with 3.6% of the state's population.
Clarification on this tweet: I should've said the 1st Circuit had 15 misdemeanor arrests transferred to adult court, but they were just 4 kids. Presumably, the kids were arrested multiple times. Statewide, there were 18 kids in adult court on misdemeanor charges.
While I'm updating these tweets, I might as well share a few maps I got to make from the data.
