Just reread one of the most important and elevating psychology papers: The vast majority of people do not break under traumatic experiences. Resilience is the default, not the rare exception.

There is also no dose–response relationship, no link between severity or frequency of traumas and PTSD, as this great review by Scott Lilienfeld shows. I am a bit flabbergasted that some want to rescue the obsolete idea of fragility at all costs. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…!

Today, I was thinking, it's weird how certain things that you learn can trigger an entire new thought process.

We are faced with daily propaganda from all sides. Commercial, political, scientific, etc propaganda hammers at us constantly. Yet the vast majority has little effect.
It rolls off us like water rolls off a duck's back. It may change our views on the edges somewhat. Political correctness may change how we communicate our thoughts. But neither propaganda nor political correctness really changes the core of a person.
One would think, with this deluge of propaganda, that we would be nothing but mind numb robots sitting and awaiting the next update of propaganda to tell us how and what to think. In some cases a few are like that. They have become nothing but NPCs to the greater Borg hivemind.

People look for easy solutions like go vote to the current social problems we find face because the alternative is to admit that perhaps we unknowingly strayed so far from normal that our normal tools for solving social issues simply no longer suffice and that is a scary thought
And don't get it twisted, voting is the easiest, least strenuous part of the democratic process. Yet it is the part that the elites have tried to reduce it down to while perpetuating a cycle of crisis and abatement
Our current political system is defined by reactive moments, where people are told to not ask questions about how we got here, but to simply make whatever choice prevents things from getting worse fastest

one of the underlying weirdnesses of the extremely prosperous societies we have built is that it's possible *both* for there to be widespread and horrific injustice and oppression and for the vast majority of people to be doing infinitely better than at any time in history
this always gets me when people (like David Graeber) talk about how awful office jobs are; 95% of the world's population historically would have killed for an office job. Office jobs in imperial societies were viciously fought over.
none of this means we can't do better. We can do so much better. But the streak of leftism that sees modern capitalism as uniquely horrible or oppressive - rather than better than what came before, even as we can do far better in the future - is misguided.

If you’re of the right age, here’s a near-contemporaneous test.
What were you doing when you heard the Challenger exploded?

For people of the right age, you know the answer to this question.
For those who are younger, substitute “when you found out about 9/11.” Or some other traumatic experience.

Those memories can be intensely sharp, carved into your brain.

I remember the look on my 4th grade teacher’s face. The color of her hair. How far my desk was from hers.

Some thoughts on why we and our institutions may be failing to deal with mass shootings because we approach them as part of broader problems, not as a distinct and self-perpetuating plague.
The problem with almost every narrative that mass shootings are “actually an X problem” is that X is usually so broad it’s like saying the real problem with asteroid impacts is that the Earth is so big.
Take mental health: It’s easy to say “mass shootings are really a mental health problem” because, well, you’d have to be crazy to commit one, right?

Having finished The Authoritarians, it's time to start a new thread of #IanLivetweetsHisResearch. Today I am finally getting past the introduction of How Propaganda Works by Jason Stanley.
Having slogged through some proper academic writing in my day, Stanley's writing is blessedly accessible. But after Altemeyer's light tone and constant dad jokes, Stanley's reads as pretty dry.
So far the introduction is full of a lot of quotations about the nature of democracy, from Victor Klemperer to Elizabeth Anderson to Plato. OF COURSE Plato.
