Well - I guess I don't actually believe historical accuracy is something attainable or even worthwhile pursuing. There's so much we don't know about the period - or have to guess at - or may have gotten totally wrong.
Like if you claim to have faithfully recreated a corner of 13th century Flanders, then I have a bevvy of art historians dying to meet you
And (Western European) medieval history especially is so reliant on partial sources, literary texts, a particular theological worldview - that it's like trying to see a mosaic through a kaleidoscope a lot of the time
I think recreating the medieval perspective (as much as we can say there was a single perspective) is more doable - and more interesting - through the artworks, the texts produced, the common points of reference (and medieval culture is completely saturated with intertextuality)
A game that took the worldview of the culture that produced St Francis or St Joan or St Radegund as its backdrop would be absolutely fascinating. Probably profoundly alienating too.
A culture that could produce the Legenda Aurea, the Confessio Amantis, La Roman de la Rose, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and still be retelling the Life of Alexander to itself was something enormously complex and full of surprising contradiction and continuity
So I find something that's just aiming to recreate a look or a more nebulous 'feel' of the period a real missed opportunity, especially if the visual, religious and literary culture isn't also informing your creative process.
And final point: you really don't need to look that hard to find examples of 'exceptional' individuals in medieval culture - either historical or literary - whether due to race, gender, or religion. The medieval mind was fascinated by difference & what it meant.
