/ Hi there. I'm a Christian. I attend church weekly. I've had some formal academic study in theology. And I'm from a southern culture built on the Church. Let's discuss your claims here, and why they make no sense on any level.
/ According to the faith we supposedly share, God exists in all places. All we have to do is call on Her. You don't need your government to call on God. But even if you did, you're in luck: the U.S. government is inextricably entwined with Christian language and symbolism.
/ Since 1956, "In God We Trust" has been the official motto of the United States. It's also required to be on all paper currency produced by the Treasury. These were the result of bills passed by Congress and signed by President Eisenhower.
/ On the 50th anniversary of "In God We Trust" becoming the official national motto, the U.S. Senate reaffirmed it as such. In 2011, the U.S. House did the same in a near-unanimous vote.
/ Since 1953, an event called the National Prayer Breakfast has been hosted by the U.S Congress and attended by every president, regardless of political affiliation. It's organized by The Fellowship Foundation, a Christian organization.
/ Since 1789, both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate have appointed official chaplains. These are paid positions. Their offices receive a budget in excess of $400,000 annually. Every single chaplain, since 1789, has been a Christian clergy member. All of them. Not one rabbi.
/ Our current Congress is about 91% Christian. This has barely changed over the past six decades. A further 7% are Jewish. Check out this handy chart from @pewresearch.
/ You haven't served in the military, so you probably wouldn't know this, but nearly every military chaplain you come across is a Christian clergy person. Of the approx. 3,000 military chaplains, the vast majority are Christian. There are no atheist or humanist chaplains. Zero.
/ Of the nine Justices currently on the Supreme Court, six are Christian and three are Jewish. Of the 113 persons appointed to the Supreme Court, 104 have been Christian, 8 have been Jewish, and just one, David Davis, who left the Court in 1877, had no known religious choice.
/ Churches and religious organizations receive generous tax exemptions despite significant controversy over how many "Christian" leaders comport themselves with this benefit (see: @JoelOsteen).
/ Soooo... not only can God *not* be banned according to the Scripture we both supposedly read, but Christians are literally in charge of everything. There is no aspect of American society, no sphere of national power, that is not dominated by Christians.
/ The "mocking people who believe in Jesus" isn't because we believe in Jesus, but because we completely fail to live out His teachings. The great bulk of Christians in this country are hypocrites. In the South, we call them "Sunday Christians": hypocrites the rest of the week.
/ Of course, the pejorative "Sunday Christian" is only really thrown at people who talk a big game on Sunday and shame others publicly for their lack of faith but then are caught red-handed being the opposite of Christ.
/ But as a Christian, let me offer you something: Christ does not belong in our government. The majority of the Founding Fathers greatly feared religious influence over government. They had seen the way Europe was torn apart over religion and how folks were oppressed by it.
/ The idea of "Separation of Church and State" is not only meant to protect religions from government overreach but more importantly: the health and integrity of government power from the toxicity and hypocrisy of religious zealots. Don't believe me? Here's Thomas Jefferson:
/ Finally, I think it's more than cruel to suggest that a failure to pray to the right god is the reason people are brutally murdered. Cruel to the victims who don't share our faith and, logically, curious to the victims who DO share our faith but were killed anyway. /thread
