1) Fail cascades are human nature. They're exactly what they sound like; compounding errors rotting away at an organization until it comes apart at the seams in dramatic fashion.
2) Eve Online was an MMO that I refer to as the petri dish of the worst aspects of human nature. It is here a decade ago that Fail Cascades became a common phrase.
3) In Eve, thousands of players would band together in alliances amidst a game where the hands-off policy of admins meant that it was ALWAYS survival of the fittest. Mechanics were obfuscated and scarcely documented specifically to make it easier to screw over people.
4) In a thunderdome of the worst instincts of people, these alliances would grow and then collapse like a star into a black hole, in what became known as a fail cascade imperium.news/20-inside-fail…
5) The aspects of a fail cascade are simple. In a sufficiently complex organization, someone along the line decides that their role, their duty is unimportant enough that they can either not do it, corrupt it, or just barely commit to the motion of it and never follow through.
6) When this happens at one point, it ripples parallel to others on the same rung of the ladder, downstream to people who see the ones above them phoning it in, and to the ones above the shirker who just let it all slide.
7) This mold of human indifference, this rot, this cancer spreads throughout the organization until one day some important task or duty comes along and hits the first rung of the ladder, the responsibiliy being handed off.
8) This sets off a chain reaction as EVERYONE shrugs it off because no one feels like its their job any more. Suddenly, the entire goddamn apparatus collapses and disaster strikes. A fail cascade.
9) theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/02/21/its… Let's look at this school shooting article detailing all the failures. The Obama administration wants to end the school to jail pipeline.
10) But, the Obama administration was lazy. The department of education's entire Modus Operandi was to shove responsibility to anyone other than itself. So, responsibility fell to the schools.
11) The schools said, we can't stop this on our own, its not our job to keep kids out of jail, so they turned to the local governments.
12) Local governments said, the hell do you expect us to do about it? Fine, police, do what you can to not arrest these kids.
13) Local police said, then what the hell are we supposed to do? Fine, we'll obfuscate and fake the reports so we don't send these kids to jail, they're the school's problem.
14) The schools, again stuck with the hot potato, do everything they can to minimize their own exposure to the trouble students without hurting their Obama-admin tracked stats.
15) Locals exposed to trouble students call the FBI, hoping the Feds will do something about it.
16) But the FBI at the DC hq says, meh, that's a problem the local police can handle on a 911 call, and don't bother.
17) So then a trouble student comes along who is extremely disruptive in class, extremely violent, the school can't handle him, the police won't handle him in 30+ 911 calls, the FBI won't handle him because thats a job for 911, his mom dies, he flips out, the gov wont step in...
18) And the lone armed security guard at the school hears of this problem student banned from campus for violence showing up with a gun and waits 4 minutes. "Man, that sounds like it is dangerous and not my problem." And now 17 people are dead.
19) Want to know why I'm a libertarian? Because there's no incentive for a government to ever help anyone. Only for a government to grow its bureaucracy until it catches an epidemic of the fuck-its, at which point catastrophe inevitably strikes
20) Yet people on the left want to trust THE GOVERNMENT who can't stop ONE PERSON WITH A GUN to confiscate ALL GUNS. Yeah, nooooooo. /end
