Does anyone have a picture of sheep in a really unusual place? It's for pranking a neural net.
so far: looks like the neural net has only a fuzzy idea of what it's actually seeing & relies heavily on probability.
this suggests a hilariously surrealist method of fooling image recognition-based security.

so obvious here but think of the mistakes algorithms can quietly make w medical & satellite photos. Expert review is crucial.

Researchers were tipped off when the algorithm not only did suspiciously well at converting maps to satellite images, but was able to reproduce features like trees & cars that weren't in the maps at all. The original map, left; the street map generated from the original, center; and the aerial map generated only from the street map. Note the presence of dots on both aerial maps not represented on the street map.

Like this one by @_joelsimon, who evolved new floorplans for an elementary school. It produced a cavelike warren of bubble-rooms because nobody had told it to do straight walls or windows. joelsimon.net/evo_floorplans… Left: Optimized for minimizing traffic flow bewteen classes and material usage. Right: Also optimized for minimizing fire escape paths.
And this ongoing thread by @sterlingcrispin whose robot dogs have learned to tap-dance, flop on the ground, do pushups, and even hack the simulation physics to glide - basically, anything but walk.

First? That title. "defies biology"? Stop using the word "biology" when you mean "the social presumption of cis as default and desirable".
Otherwise you leave yourself open to people pointing out that eyeglasses defy biology, antibiotics defy biology, chemotherapy defies biology, and HIV therapy defies biology. You just failed at the is-ought distinction in your title. Not a good start.

Really frustrating that Alison Moyet deletes her tweets. Apparently if you’re a female person who does not profess a particular gender identity, your place in a conversation about this idea of your ‘gender’ is to hush & be told how to refer to your own sense of self & existence.
When German sexologist Volkmar Sigusch began to use ‘cis’ in relation to gender, who thought we would be held to it as social or political law? We can critique Freud, for example, anyone really but this seems to be off bounds?
Moyet was even reduced to using ridiculous phrases which act like genitals are floating objects, unattached from whole bodies. Even then:
“People with vaginas” ✅
“Vagina born” (she meant born with a vagina) ❎
That’s quite bizarre.

1. This is the story of how lack of terrorist interest in nuclear plants — as well as the few past acts of terrorism against nuclear plants — demonstrate the relative *invulnerability,* not vulnerability, of nuclear plants to attack.
2. Greenpeace earlier this week announced its employees had crashed a drone into a nuclear power plant in France in order to show the world just how vulnerable nuclear plants are to terrorist attacks.
3. "This is a highly symbolic action,” said a Greenpeace spokesperson. “It shows that spent fuel pools are very accessible, this time from the air, & therefore extremely vulnerable to attack," he added, referring to how fuel rods are cooled in pools before being recycled.

Picture a business where the entire business model is set up predicated on a foundational idea.

The business model of Conservative Inc. & the political elite class is that Donald Trump has no clue what he is doing, he's a moron.
Therefore everything Trump does is the wrong thing. Even if positive results accrue, then it was just a lucky accident.
People who just spent over a year laughing at and mocking all of Trump's foreign policy moves, from his Saudi Arabia visit to his China tour now have to 'explain' what's going on with North Korea.
