1/6 When you see someone use the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator in a professional context, call them out. It does not meet basic criteria of psychometric scales, was "developed" in the 40s by people without any training, & is based on outdated psychoanalytic ideas.

2/ MBTI categorizes people according to outdated archetypes based on ideas of Carl Jung that have not been taken seriously for many decades in psychology. These archetypes are as valid as zodiacs or tarot cards, and have hardly any external validity.

3/ MBTI lacks validity and reliability. "Scientific" work on MBTI is largely published in a journal that is funded by the people who make money with it.

5/ In addition, personality works as a continuum: everybody is somewhere between intro- & extravert. MBTI cuts these normal distributions and assigns them to extremes, which explains the low re-test reliability (~50% get a different type when retaking the test after 5 weeks).
6/6 So whenever you see anybody using the MBTI in a professional context, call them out. All it does is make a few people rich.

1/ Why depression is not a useful or reasonable phenotype for research in clinical psychology, psychiatry, or medicine: a summary of evidence in 18 tweets.

Sx = symptoms, MDD = major depressive disorder.
2/ There are ~280 scales to assess MDD severity (tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.120…). Scales are often only weakly inter-correlated, and differ widely in symptom content. The 7 most commonly used rating scales encompass > 50 disparate Sx (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27792962).
3/ This means that MDD is a very ill-defined phenotype, with little agreement on how to measure it (imagine this amount of disagreement for e.g. cancer or HIV). The DSM-5 defines 9 Sx, but these were chosen based on subjective, not psychometric reasons (biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/13/72).

Intersectionality is acknowledging that others have it harder than you, recognizing a privilege they don’t possess, and using that privilege to help.

When we individually fail to practice intersectionality, white supremacy wins and we collectively lose.
Remember that white supremacy began because plantation owners were concerned with revolt, which had previously succeeded.

They saw that giving advantage from one group (poor whites) over another (black slaves) would breed resentment and cause infighting, preventing alliance.

I’m starting to see firsthand, how Russia used support for Bernie Sanders to divide us.
I supported Sanders, and many accounts which I still follow are starting to come into focus.
I’m compiling a list of those accounts that have a clear goal of dividing us.

One obvious sign is when an account is critical of US foreign policy, which deserves criticism, but defends Russia.
Search the term “Russiaphobia”, and you’ll find plenty of accounts to keep an eye on.

Right now, it appears as though there’s a major PR push for Finland—which has me very concerned.
Many pro-Russia accounts are trying to create a narrative of Finnish people being in favor of Russia.
In the past, such campaigns are a prequel to a hostile military action.

After disappearing for weeks, Melania has resurfaced in order to silence rumors that she's secretly recovering from an injury caused by Trump. Her tweets will only fuel that fire, so here are some tips on how to avoid concern-trolling battered women online and IRL:
1) If you suspect that someone is in an abusive situation, don't insist that they leave unless you're ready to give them shelter. Leaving an abuser isn't about mental strength or confidence - it's primarily about logistics.
2) Don't shame someone for staying. You don't know what kind of threats they've received. In Melania's case, remember that she has a child with Trump. Abusers routinely threaten to separate children from their non-toxic parent.

Hate to do it but with Rudy's "clarification" on Comey I'm afraid it's time for a dreaded THREAD about obstruction of justice.
Giuliani's defense of Trump firing Comey is that "It is undisputed that the President's dismissal of former Director Comey...was clearly within his Article II power." Correct -- but that's the problem!!!!
The whole reason that Obstruction of Justice is such a big deal *when the president does it* is because presidents have so many lawful powers they can do in pursuit of unlawfully preventing justice from being done.

Expect to be triggered, whether you dismiss psychology because @nntaleb or think everything is archetypes because @jordanbpeterson.
The Big Five personality traits and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) are the two most widely known personality instruments.

The B5 are based on the surveys & experiments of academic psychologists, while the MBTI comes from the psychoanalytic work of Carl Jung.
The B5 and the MBTI both are semantic constructs. They both are widely misunderstood and misused. They both are surrounded by myths and cults.

But one of them is virtually useless in practice compared to the other.
