"The Remain side did it too." Really? Here's the rule. (legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/36/…) THREAD.
Parliament imposed spending caps because spending can influence outcomes. And we want to live in a democracy, not a plutocracy. We want all the people to have the power, not just the rich ones. /1
Those with lots to spend try to dodge those spending limits - those like @SteveBakerHW, here campaigning for Vote Leave - and one way they try to dodge them is by creating lots of separate entities, each with its own limit, but which spend as one. /2
And the law prevents this by saying, "if all those entities spend as one to a common plan, the spending of the puppet entities counts towards the cap of the puppet-master" (see para 22(3), snipped in the top tweet). /3
The rule doesn't ban having morning conferences. It doesn't ban working together. The rule exists to protect the spending cap - and to prevent our democracy from being bought. It bans spending together. /4
The usual suspects are out and about, misleading and dissembling. They know they are deliberately peddling nonsense. But, sadly, that's how those people roll. As we know. ENDS
Meanwhile, here are some questions for the man who likes to get his Egyptian cotton sheets from the taxpayer, but isn't so keen on me repairing a vintage quilt, @michaelgove.
