Using the most recently published USS active membership data (2011) and known responses to UUK survey, institutions who accepted risk in Q3 represented 3 times as many members as those that didn’t accept risk @USSbriefs @etymologic @shakenbeck @MikeOtsuka see thread below 1/16
My FOI request for active membership data in 2017 from USS was refused on the grounds that USS is a private company and not subject to FOI requirements 2/16 whatdotheyknow.com/request/active…
USS refer in their response to their 2011 annual report - the last time they publicly set out membership data per institution. ‘We have not published this data since (and have no intention to do so again)’ 3/16 uss.co.uk/~/media/docume…
In 2011 there were 139,931 active members which is considerably less than the 190,000 that we know were active members in March 2017 according to the latest annual report. So any conclusions reached below come with the caveat that the data is 7 years old 4/16
Nonetheless, assuming that the number of active members at each institution as a proportion of the total is likely to be similar then the inferences made below are likely to be fairly accurate 5/16
390 USS member orgs listed from p39 onwards in annual report. 140 Pre-92 Universities (including individual Oxbridge and 2 Durham colleges) account for 133,193 of total of 139,931 active members. 50 new universities have 1,687 members. 195 non-universities=5,011 members 6/16
Biggest members are Open University , Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh , Nottingham, Leeds, kings, Cardiff, Imperial, Birmingham, Glasgow, Southampton, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle, Warwick all with over 2,500 members. 7/16
Concentration of membership is very high amongst relatively small number of institutions with these 18 with biggest numbers accounting for over 70,000 active members (half of the total active membership) 8/16
And many institutions as @etymologic has pointed out are very small. All the Oxbridge colleges account for less than 2% of the total. UK Socrates-Erasmus Council has no active members for example. UCEA has 9 members, UUK 44, UCU 183, USS 230. 9/16
We know from @USSbriefs @shakenbeck @etymologic @MikeOtsuka @nm_davies about responses of up to 44 institutions to the UUK consultation survey. Bristol, Cambridge, Dundee, Heriot-Watt, Oxford, St Andrews and 14 (so far) Oxbridge colleges rejected risk being proposed in Q3 10/16
Together, using 2011 data these accounted for 19,285 or 13.7% of active members. The Oxbridge colleges - who are 14 of those 20 institutions rejecting risk - account for 974 active members (less than 1% of active members) 11/16
The 22 institutions known to accept risk can be found on @MikeOtsuka and in @shakenbeck @USSbriefs number 12. Using 2011 membership data these 22 institutions accounted for 56,650 members or 40 per cent of total active members. 12/16
Based on the known responses so far then, those institutions accepting risk in the September survey accounted for three times as many active members as those that rejected risk. 13/16
Finally. Oxford, Cambridge, some individual Oxbridge colleges + Bristol have all changed their position since February indicating they now accept risk. This means institutions still rejecting risk (with many missing responses, admittedly) covered 3% of active members 14/16
There are still 72 responses survey responses unknown. We know from USS, UUK and @JosephineCumbo questions that 1/3 of 116 survey responses rejected risk. So around 20 more responses will be reject, a further 50 accept. 15/16
Institutions accepting risk in UUK survey will cover a much higher proportion of active membership than those that rejected - likely to be three times as many 16/16
