"We can't be undemocratic, because we were elected." is one of the most dangerous things anyone can say in a democracy.
The idea that "the will of the people" is the only thing that matters - that a democracy is nothing more than an election every few years...
You hear politicians saying this from Hungary to Poland to Brexitania to Turkey to the US... And they're wrong.
Let's say you have 10 people seated around a table, and 6 of them decide to throw one of the others out the window. They even vote on it. Throwing the guy out the window is, "the will of the people," right?
Well, it may be, "the will of the people," but it's still wrong, and everyone can instantly understand why: some things are more important, more fundamental than a vote. Human rights - like the right to life in this case - cannot be removed by an election.
A system that is only elections without respect for these deeper, more fundamental rights is not a democracy. It's a tyranny of the majority.
Something to think about the next time you hear a politician try to claim that he can't be undemocratic because he won an election. Or the next time you hear someone proclaim a policy represents, "the will of the people."
