A few people seem to have difficulty grasping the historical parallels between some modern democracies & Europe in the 1920s-40s, because they only recall what Hitler & other extremists were doing toward the end of that period. As if genocide appears out of thin air...
But Nazism didn’t start with Auschwitz. It started with people believing a lying hate-monger - becoming fanatical for him & accepting his dehumanizing certain groups. It strengthened when other political forces gave in or thought they could achieve their own aims through him.
The horror of all mass atrocity crimes begins with poisoned politics of hate and demagoguery. That’s where we are in some countries today. New horrific crimes are not inevitable, but we’re clearly a few steps down that road, so we all need to push back loudly. That means you too.
The point is: if you're waiting for the worst to happen before you speak out, you're leaving it far too late.
