Keep seeing this and it seems worth noting it conflates two separate travesties. First, HHS has lost track of 1,475 minors of some seven thousand who show up at the border *unaccompanied by family* and were placed with sponsors. nytimes.com/2018/04/26/us/… ...
Second, and separately, John Kelly has been talking about inaugurating a new inhumane policy of separating children from their parents in immigration detention. God knows how many kids they would lose if they started doing that. businessinsider.com/john-kelly-fam…
Splitting up families in immigration detention and losing track of refugees who came to the border as unaccompanied minors are two separate, awful stories—not the same story.
Also worth saying the HHS story about 1500 missing kids is from April 26. It got subsumed in the maelstrom of news for nearly a month before the twittersphere noticed it.

See a lot of people sharing an argument to the effect that ORR being unable to reach ~1500 kids is good news bc it means they’re being sheltered from federal law enforcement. That may be in some cases, but it’s not so simple.
ORR was investigated by the Senate after it unwittingly released eight Guatemalan teenagers into forced labor at an Ohio egg farm. That investigation found that the agency didn’t do standard due diligence for foster care placements. hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
You can read more about the egg farm case here. It appears the parents effectively consigned their children into indentured servitude in exchange for the money necessary to get them to the US, and ORR didn’t have systems in place to catch the scheme. marionstar.com/story/news/cri…
It’s certainly to be hoped ORR has its act together now, is doing proper diligence, and all those sponsors ducking its outreach have the kids best interests at heart in doing so. However, the hearing last month didn’t offer much comfort on that score.
tl;dr the immigration machine is incredibly complicated and was bad in lots of ways before trump got his hands on it. Trump is adding trauma to the system—like octane blown through the air intake—with his new policy of separating family units at the border.

Kind of hilariously the Associated Press has been sending Erik Wemple factually false statements about its fact check tweet all day.
(The parties *had* found common ground, which is why the senate passed its funding bills with a voice vote late last year. Then Trump panicked and fled the agreement.)

Weiss’s column isn’t a travelogue about why she recommends Australian hotels to other tourists. It’s a disquisition on Australian society commending it as somehow uniquely free of the ills of the modern world, and it’s ignorant of what happened in Australia while she was there.

This also needs context. More people are harmed by a federal government shutdown than federal employees. Native American communities, in particular, are immediately adversely affected. As the shutdown continues, the harms expand and multiply throughout the country’s population.
There are businesses that rely on the federal government as a customer—contractors of all sorts and sizes—and as a landlord—e.g. vendors at national parks. People who own and work for those businesses are harmed by the interruption of their income.
Scientists missing their grant funds, journalists who can’t access public records, inventors who can’t get their patents, entrepreneurs who can’t get business licenses ... This bit of context is, in all likelihood, barely scratching the surface of harms flowing from the shutdown.

after being sentenced back in march to 8 months and 5 months, respectively, for trespassing and destruction of property charges related to removing the tarps from the confederate statues, brian lambert and chris wayne were arraigned today for their appeals.
the arraignment was initially set for june, but neither man's lawyer showed up to court, seemingly to the surprise of one of them.
both men, now represented by a new attorney, entered not guilty pleas today. lambert's trial will be january 9th, wayne's is feb 20th. both men waived the right to a jury trial, which was probably smart. they aren't exactly the most charming individuals.

Seems worth noting that longstanding precedent in the 4th Circuit recognizes that list of juror names ordinarily should be public in a criminal trial. See In Re Baltimore Sun Co, 841 F.2d 74 (4th Cir. 1988).
It's not a bright-line rule, see fn 5, but it's not like the media organizations are trying to establish a new norm in the Manafort case. From the 4th Circuit case:

1/ So, the policy of automatic separation /appears/ to be over.

Which means that parents & kids will be held together in shadowy detention facilities that get little or no outside oversight.

I've filed bunches of FOIA requests with multiple agencies to get a glimpse inside.
2/ And remember: The Office of Refugee Resettlement at Health & Human Services is running an entirely separate system of facilities for children who show up to the border unaccompanied. (The converted Wal-Mart at Brownsville TX is the most famous example.)
3/ The ORR facilities started taking in immigrant children who were forcibly separated from their parents, but that was a recent development. The primary reason they exist is to detain minors who come to the US by themselves.

Anyway, I have FOIA requests in with ORR & HHS too.

1. Deceitful Rhetoric on Illegal Immigrant Family Separation

Media & Democratic "focus" on illegal immigrant families being separated at the border conspicuously tugs at people's heartstrings without making any effort at all to offer alternatives. Coincidence? I think not.
2. Who made any policy or issued any executive orders which made it attractive for illegal immigrants to cross the border accompanied by children? Was it Trump? No, it was Obama. Obama's actions willfully unleashed this phenomenon.
3. Once an illegal crosses the border accompanied by a child, consider all possible alternatives:
a) Immediately deport without due process.
b) Build five-star accommodations (at great expense, considering the number of arrivals) to house them while reviewing their case.

Time for some facts. There are 3 separate immigration stories that are seemingly being conflated by the media & pundits.

Story 1: ACLU report on migrants children being abused.

Story 2: Feds lost track of ~1500 minor immigrants.

Story 3: Separations of families at the border.
Story 1: This story is based on an ACLU report that covers 2009-2014. It has nothing to do with the Trump admin or separating families as it mostly relates to unaccompanied minors at the border. However, the abuses were serious and systematic. Very possible many still occurring.
Story 2: This is being covered as a scandal, but I do not believe it is one. Essentially thousands of unaccompanied minors were processed and then released to family members or others in the US. When HHS tried to check on them later, ~1500/8000 didn't respond to the survey.
