1/ This year, I had the privilege of travelling the EU28 thanks to a #DemocracyNeedsImagination grant from @ECF_tweets & my generous crowdfunders who believe #TheFutureisEurope 💙🇪🇺
Find below my love letter to Europe: The UK is turning its back on our greatest relationship 🇬🇧💔
2/ Dear Austria,
I got sunburnt sitting on the bank of the Danube River sketching the Slovak boats entering the city.
I met a friendly fellow Artist at the Karlskirche where we watched a gymnast in the fountain - we follow each other on Insta now 🇦🇹💙🇪🇺 crowdfunder.co.uk/eusupergirltou…
3/ Dear Belgium,
I have been to Brussels more times this year than I can remember: Always a delight to see my wonderful friends who live & work in the city: Playing Bubble Darts with @happeningo at the James Joyce where I got to perform this year 🇧🇪💙🇪🇺 crowdfunder.co.uk/eusupergirltou…
The true outrage of the collapse of the People's Vote is that an organisation that "was not professionally run", was "raising £100,000 a week in small donations" which should have been used to directly fund grassroots campaigns. /1 theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
Instead we've had a top-down, authoritarian campaign controlling the grassroots activists & local groups, run by the metropolitan elite who have self-destructed the entire campaign & let down all of their supporters at the crucial moment. /2
The People's Vote always were a narrow, targeted (at a small number of labour MPs), corporate branded, soulless, "media friendly" organisation with a single aim: to get a 2nd referendum. They were not campaigning to #stopbrexit - yet they tried to control all those who were /3
So today, I've had a guy follow me all the way down a road, constantly pestering me "Hello! Where are you going? Etc."
And just now a guy stops, looks me up & down and says "Oh God. Oh shit."
Are women not allowed out on their own in Greece? Or do I just look really bad today?🤔
I'd hasten to add that these 2 incidents were in addition to the standard level of street harassment that I anticipate everywhere I go... it doesn't just happened in Greece: it's endemic across Europe. And it's not OK. Because it intimidates women out of public spaces... 2.
People have expressed genuine shock when I've told them I am travelling alone. Likewise: I've had numerous emails/messages from women saying they think I am "brave" for travelling on my own - AND THIS IS THE WORST THING: they would be too scared to travel alone. 3.
1/ Classic start to a Northern train journey: 24 min delay due to "awaiting a member of staff" & the train to MCR airport is rammed incl. a group of rowdy lads singing Vera Lynn "We'll meet again" & drinking cans of Bud Light at 8:30am 🙄🤦🏼♀️ #EUsupergirlTour ✈🇬🇧
2/ Then the "Direct" MCR airport service randomly decides it isn't going to the airport after all (don't they realise people have flights to catch?!)🤦🏼♀️✈
Funny: I have to plan 1hr contingency time for train Fckups when I travel to Northern airports.
I don't have to in London🤔
3/ Next stops on the #EUsupergirlTour 🇪🇺:
I was considering not tweeting due to "grifter holiday" trolling - then last night I received an email requesting the use of some footage I filmed in #Latvia for an educational documentary for a Non-profit...
Sadly my friend, and fellow EU activist @martin_speer informed me yesterday that the British rail companies want to pull out of the interrail scheme... 😱🚂🇪🇺
Cue the Brexiters claiming that this has "nothing to do with #Brexit" 🙄
We need to fight this! #DontLeaveInterrail
2/ I'm visiting 9 countries over the next 2 weeks:
Sofia, Bulgaria🇧🇬 #EUsupergirlTour#TheFutureisEurope
Supported by @ECF_tweets
3/ A little French boy dragging a bag full of baguettes through the Eurostar is literally the best thing I have seen today 😂🇨🇵🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖🚆#LoveEurope#ViveLaFrance#EUsupergirlTour
3/ I met a lady who has been part of a pro Ukraine demonstration today, she told me the threat the country is under from Russia & how they aspire to become an EU member state 🇪🇺 Europe is an ASPIRATIONAL vision! #TheFutureisEurope#EUsupergirlTour@PulseofEuropeCZ
2/ lovely #Birthday cards from #EUsuperDad and my Sidcup Mum 😁😍🎉🎁🎈 and a super BREXSHIT necklace from @Fthetories 😂 I'm sure it will be a "magical" day! 🤩🦄 Even if there's no #Brexit unicorns in sight! 😁
1/ This week I took a phone call where someone asked me, in earnest, "I'm interested to know what do you do when you're not on the streets protesting?"
Given that I have spent nearly every waking moment of every day for the last 2 and a half years thinking about #StopBrexit...
2/ and campaigning to promote the EU - I thought it might be worth writing a list of everything that "being an activist" involves. (Not because I feel like I need to justify myself to critics but because it might be interesting for people to know the work #EUsupergirl does)...
3/ I have also spent a huge amount of time travelling (and sorting all the expense forms) to get to events and protests across the UK & EU. And these are the places i've been to campaigning to #StopBrexit or to promote the #EU. (Sorry anywhere I have forgotten -it's a long list!)
1/Confronting Tim Martin in #Wetherspoons:
The clip cuts out, but I pointed out that UK economy has dropped to bottom of G7 & experienced 2.1% impact to GDP as a result of fall in Sterling.
Tim told me that I was wrong - he has his own "#AlternativeFacts" 🙄 #StopBrexit
2/ This is after I showed Tim Martin my #24ReasonstoRemain booklet & asked him "If 95% of this legislation has been passed by our democratically elected UK MEPs - how can you tell people we have lost Sovereignty when it also says in the #Brexit white paper that we never did?"
3/ @Nigel_Farage did exactly the same thing when I confronted him with the same argument about #EU democracy in a pub in Place Lux. He squealed "Elected MEPs have no power - they're just an upper chamber" and ran away. 🙄
3/ I've been called a lot of names. Had a horn blasted right in my ear. 🙄👂📯 A lot of complaints about the #BollockstoBrexitBus ... My response "If Michael Gove & John Bercow can use Bollocks (in parliament) - so can we! It's a fine Anglo Saxon word that means "nonsense"! 😁
1/ The team is in #Eastbourne#Wetherspoons. Within 5 mins of arriving a bitter faced woman comes up to me & orders me "not to disrupt the event or she will vote Leave again in a #PeoplesVote"
I asked her if she was threatening me? 🤔
(At least she is thinking about another vote)
2/ absolutely packed full in #Eastbourne#Wetherspoons. Some holding @LeaveMnsLeave placards. Everyone squeezed in like sardines. I heard a lady whining that Remainers had come. Someone else pulled a pro EU badge off my guitar case and slipped it into their pocket (Beats me?)🤷🇪🇺
3/This lady asks what facts Tim has to show food prices won't rise as a result of #Brexit, as evidenced by the various "commentaries" he dismisses. He claims we don't need to charge tarrifs on anything & then food prices will drop, @Jim_Cornelius taking him to task on his lies
Arrived at #Wetherspoons in MCR. Tim Martin arrives 10 mins late & tells us "he is going to give us a talk". I thought this was supposed to be a #Brexit debate? 🤔 "Metropolitan elites are pushing for a deal we don't need & if we crash out on #NoDeal we will avoid paying £39bn"
I just had to point out to Tim that it is our own government who hasn't been implementing EU laws on controlling migration and hasn't properly documented #EUcitizens living in the UK, as they do in other EU countries.
He just admitted he needs to go back and "check his books." 🙄
This woman quite rightly pointing out that if we don't pay the £39bn financial obligation... then who else is going to pay @Nigel_Farage's pension? 🤔 Tim says his research hasn't led him to any answers.
"When we get our #PeopleVote - it is imperative that we make the positive case for the EU, but this will be just the beginning of an ongoing narrative we must sustain: educate, inform & work to change the hostile attitude to Europe."
2/ "Brexit is a categoric & catastrophic mistake but if in another referendum it is still “the will” of our tragically misinformed electorate, then we continue to make our arguments & lead the campaign to rejoin. It's always worth fighting for the values you believe in."
3/"For this reason I have admiration for activists with opposing values to my own – At least they have not fallen victim to apathy. It's necessary in a democracy to challenge each other in a civilised discourse & reach compromise that serves the interests of the many not the few"
1/ I've just spent today catching up with an old school friend I haven't seen since last Christmas. She is in her final year studying medicine at uni - she's a smart girl. Yet, she told me that she is bored to tears by Brexit and she's sick of hearing about it on the news.
2/ She said she's stopped listening to Radio 4 because all she ever hears about the #IrishBackstop. She admitted she didn't know what it is, but is sick of hearing every man & his dog interviewed for their opinion. She prefers listening to "calming music" on radio 3 instead
3/ classic example of media boring people to death with politico's opinions rather than providing simple, factual information.
1/ So despite the check-in staff at MCR airport being very entertained by the #BollockstoBrexit stickers on my passport, my case got pulled out at security and I was ordered to remove them because they are "offensive"🤔 (Personally I think #Brexitbis more offensive than bollocks)
2/ I objected pointing out that "bollocks" had been determined not to be offensive in a court of law. The member of staff didn't believe, so I told her to look up the Sex Pistols album "never mind the Bollocks". She told me she "wasn't a sex pistols fan"🙄 completely irrelevant.
3/ I told her there was no legal requirement to remove the stickers and she was impeding on my freedom of speech. She threatened to call airport police to deal with the situation & accused me of wasting security staff time. I told her she was the one making unnecessary demands.
Tomorrow I will post a package of #StopBrexit paraphernalia to you
The materials are used by the Remain campaign & have been crowdfunded
I will also post prints of photos from the last 21 months (see thread below) so you can see what you haven't been covering
1/It has taken me several hours to compile nearly 2 years of photos from the #Remain campaign into this 22 page document, however i felt it necessary to do so in order to illustrate to the #BBC the extent and commitment of our campaign which you haven't been acknowledging.
