@ThisAmerLife had an EXCELLENT episode on the @DCCC and the way they select candidates. As a robotics engineer who ran for Congress and lost the nomination, I feel like I can add to this conversation. 1/15

Before I get started, there will be those who will want to turn this into a Bernie vs Hillary thing, so let me preempt that by saying that isn't the point of this thread. This thread isn't about issues or purity tests, this is about strategy and missed opportunities. 2/15
When I got in the race 14 months ago, it was a field of 3 including me. The others were similar to me - they were concerned citizens who had never before held elected office. All of us showed up to every rally, every activist gathering, and ended up becoming close friends. 3/15

trump calling immigrants "animals" isn't just a distraction. It's a tactic that is part of the larger white nationalist agenda to Make America White Again.

trump's immigration policies are about reclaiming POLITICAL POWER for whites/the GOP.

trump's attack on immigrants, especially regarding POC immigrants, is clearly motivated by racism. But, we miss the big picture if we just think of it as irrational hate.

We need to understand the attack on immigration is part of the larger white nationalist political agenda.
White nationalism is a racist ideology that wants to ensure that whites retain its political majority and power in the United States. It's a response to changing racial demographics that will make whites a numerical minority in the coming decades.

A Quick First Amendment Primer Thread

1. Does Twitter violate the 1st A when it bans users for their tweets? NO.
2. Does the NFL violate the 1st A when it bans kneeling? NO.
3. Does trump violate the 1st A when he blocks users? YES (for now)

The key to understanding these three answers is that the First Amendment only applies to the GOVERNMENT, not to private actors.

The 1A states that "CONGRESS shall make no law...abridging freedom of speech."

It also applies to state and local govts.
The 1A does not apply to private actors, and so they can ban speech that the gov't cannot.

So, a college student attending UC Berkeley has 1A speech rights b/c Berkeley is a state school.

But, a college student attending Harvard, a private school, does not.

In a conference about undocumented immigration and sanctuary cities, trump declared:

Undocumented immigrants “aren’t people. These are animals.”

This is blatant dehumanization, and as history shows, we all should be thoroughly alarmed and horrified.

A thread
In full, trump said:

“We have people coming into the country or trying to come in, we're stopping a lot of them, but we're taking people out of the country. You wouldn't believe how bad these people are.”

“These aren't people. These are animals."
Viewing and treating people as subhuman animals is a key tool of dehumanization.

That practice has led to brutal murders and genocide.

The following are some historical examples drawn from David Livingstone Smith’s book “Less Than Human."

Constructive Dialogue and the Resistance
A thread by @Clara_Resists & @Augustus709

We’ve seen it happen countless times. Someone tweets something and someone else disagrees. Someone replies with something snarky, someone else bites back.
Others start to chime in and it quickly spirals out of control. Stress magnifies it. Life under the Trump Administration has not been easy. We are at times angry, scared, incredulous, confused.
It’s hard to respond constructively when we are struggling with so much inner turmoil and anxiety.

How can we do this better? How can we debate constructively? How can we engage in a positive way with others who may not play by the same rules?

How many followers do you have?

If you are in the Resistance, there's a great chance you have many more than the average tweeter.

With more followers comes greater power.

With that power comes great responsibility.

A Thread. #RebelScum
In the Resistance, through #FBR parties and the practice of following back resistance members, numerous resisters have gained a significant amount of followers/

It's common to see resisters with 10k+ followers, even common to see resisters with 20k+ followers.
Understand how RARE it is for tweeters to have that many followers.

In 2016, a study found that 95.9 million tweeters tweeted at least once in six months. Within that 95.9 million, the average tweeter had just 707 followers.

Anti-immigrant hysteria has engulfed this nation, fueled in large part by the president's open hostility to and antipathy for immigrants.

What can be done to fight such hysteria?

The key is learn about and to stop their dehumanization. Here's how.

A Thread.
Dehumanization is the process of viewing and treating members of a social group as less than human, as subhuman. Once a group has been dehumanized, it becomes too easy to inflict upon them the worst atrocities and abuses.
In fact, once a group has been thoroughly dehumanized, abuse is virtually inevitable.

Undocumented immigrants have been subject to gross dehumanization, esp. in the past several years. How? Largely through dehumanizing language and images.

Forget the SOTU. Let's focus on how the Resistance should proceed in 2018.

Here are five things we should focus on in making the Resistance stronger and more powerful as we gear up for midterms.

The State of A New Union Thread.

#RebelScum #RBA⚖️
1. Shift from naked opinions to the empirical.

There's nothing wrong with us expressing our opinions on politics. But, I suggest we focus more on empirical analysis so that we can bolster our positions and arguments on policy matters.
So, if a trump fan says immigrants take away jobs from Americans, we can respond by labeling the argument as racist or dumbfounded. Or, we can rebut the argument with empirical evidence that their assumption is wrong.

I've been part of the Twitter resistance for a year now. I'm going to share some thoughts about why & how I resist.

Some people may not like some things I say here. I’m sorry for that, but they need to be said. 1 #WhyIResist #HowIResist #RebelScum #TheResistance
Some things in the first year were fun: meeting like-minded people, the #scifi characters, learning how to take effective action. Celebrating #victories like beating the #ACA repeal bills.

A lot of it wasn't fun - the threats of nuclear war, the daily stress of bad news. 2
Follow parties were fun, and a good way to promote a message and raise awareness, connect with other resistors and grow our followings. They had themes and served a purpose and there was about about one a month.  3 #PartyWithAPurpose #trending #amplify #effective
