2/Although Jonah first presented to me as a patient with pain, potentially in need of opioids, early on he confessed to me that wasn't quite true.

3/Jonah was the 1st person rescued with naloxone I prescribed.
He lived many years that followed.
While we got illicit opioid use close to 0 with bupe/naloxone, he struggled with other substances & an underlying emotional/spiritual distress.

Itās #OverdoseAwarenessDay. As someone who started shooting heroin at 13, I have something to say to parents (a thread š§µ).
Itās never too early to start talking with your kids about drugs. The first time I took an opiate I was 8, heroin at 13. And no one suspected a thing.

The strongest prevention? Modeling healthy ways to handle the sh*t life serves up. Start talking about emotional regulation early.

Iāll cap #OverdoseAwarenessDay with this. Data show there was no correlation between Rx opioid dispensing and the drug overdose death rate in 38 states & D.C (represented by the dots) in 2018. The closer R-squared (R^2) is to 1, the stronger the correlation. Here R^2 is 0.00002.
0.00002 is VERY VERY far from 1, indicating that the Rx opioid dispensing rate from state to state had no effect on drug overdose numbers.
Explanation of the data: In simple linear regression, R-squared is known as the correlation coefficient, on a scale of 0-1, 1 being a perfect linear correlation and 0 being no correlation.
Effective early drug education is necessary to curb drug #overdose deaths. And no, I donāt mean DARE. I taught a univ. freshman seminar class and they go through a lesson on āsubstance abuseā and those 18 yr olds didnāt know sh*t about drugs. #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay
If thatās the representation of our teenage and young adults in the US, then we need to do more in middle school & high school to educate them about drugs, responsible medical use, and the risks of irresponsible or recreational drug use. Educate them rather than scare them str8.
We canāt look at the drug epidemic as a problem that will be solved overnight, or next year, or even in 5 years. We must invest more in educating the younger generations with basic information about drugs.

2) There are around 8.5 Lakh people who inject drugs (PWID) in India. Opioids (heroin and buprenorphine) are the most common drugs used by PWID in India. PWID is a unique subpopulation of people who use drugs (PWUD), especially prone to opioid overdose.
3) Extramedical opioid use is associated with a risk of fatal opioid overdose. Worldwide, around 0.5 million deaths are attributable to drug use (~70% related to opioids, with more than 30% deaths caused by overdose).
Itās #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay. In America, the drug epidemic does not get enough attention from the media and our many public officials. Many ppl arenāt even aware of the fact that ~100k ppl died last year due to drug overdoses.
Even before #COVID19 came along and numbed us from every day death tolls, 200 ppl were dying each day from drug use in the US. Now that number is 250 ppl dying per day from drug overdoses. The first step to a solution is to recognize that there is a problem.
Today in honor of #OverdoseAwarenessDay , Iāll be posting a bunch of information about drug overdoses. Since I am from Florida, a lot of my data will be from Florida, but the sentiment of this huge problem applies to almost every large metro area in the US.

I worked with former Congressman & now Chief of Staff to President Trump, Mark Meadows, to pass legislation to strengthen the Office of National Drug Control Policy and improve supply and demand reduction programs ā but it's not enough (2/x)
